Decal Silvering
Posted by cvsaylr on Thursday, January 16, 2014 10:36 AM

Hello All,

Been awhile since I've been here and still building the Hasegawa F-14A (which is coming along satisfactorilly). Anyway, I applied the vertical stabilizer decals to a completely smooth gloss black surface using Micro-set and Micro-sol. I let them dry overnight and the next morning painted over them with a clearcoat of about 2/3 dullcoat, 1/3 glosscoat and a bit of thinner (mineral spirits). The effect is generally ok, the stabs look worn and weathered, but the large decals silvered a bit. I'm not sure why that happened, but I'm wondering if you guys can tell me so that it dosn't happen again in future projects. I have no means to post photos or I would. Thanks for your help,

Dave

OK. read some stuff in the decal forum, sliced through the decals and applied more Micro-sol. got rid of the silvering. Should I re-coat the pieces with dullcoat or leave them alone? I'm thinking of recoating.

You might want to let the decals dry a little longer than overnight.  I usually let mine dry for several days before overcoating them.  That also gives me the chance to clean off any decal solution that could stain the finish down the road.

There has been a well-discussed thread on decal silvering in  the decal forum.  You may benefit from that discussion.
