Hello. IIRC, silver Spitfires were not bare metal, but were actually a lacquered finish called "High Speed Silver" or something like that. There is no need to do panel variation in that case.  Hang in there and best wishes to you on your fight against cancer!

I say seal with a gloss coat, apply decals, another gloss coat, washes, and then a final topcoat, probably a semi gloss or satin to seal it all in and tie it together. Any exhaust stains, oil leaks, etc. on top of that.

I am happy to hear about the news from your docs. May you have may long years of model building and sharing your work with us here ahead of you.

Stik, was there ever a case where they were NMF?  The reason I ask is I'm supposed to be doing a 1/32 gunnery school Mk.XVI for the NMF GB here in what I thought was a NMF.  Wondering if a change of my entry is necessary.

Ruddratt, I really can't say yes or no to that. I don't have my Spitfire refernces here with me at work, and off the top of my head, i am not that well versed on it. All I do know is that post war, the RAF went to that overall lacquered finish on many of their aircraft types. Considering the amount of rain that the UK gets, not to mention many of their post war Empire outposts, for corrosion control alone, the lacquer finish makes sense. The USAF was done with bare metal by the early 60s for that reason. They still had silver aircraft early on into Vietnam, but those were lacquered as well.

Never considered the environments' effect on the finish, so it does make sense not to leave it bare metal. I'll do a bit more digging and see what turns up. Thanks stik. Yes
