Tamiya Tape: Love at First Slice
Posted by RadMax8 on Saturday, April 5, 2014 1:54 PM

Ok, I know I'm late to the party here, but I just masked a canopy for the first time with Tamiya tape. I have to say, I feel like an idiot for waiting so long!!! The tape itself is very thin, easy to cut, and easy to make curves with. I guess I'll have the final verdict once I unmask everything, but I'm hooked!

I like it too. My only mistake was in buying a roll of the widest size they make. Makes it tricky to pull off the roll in one length as it tears so easily in the middle. I'll buy narrower next time since I don't need it that wide anyway.

Get a roll of each, narrow and wide, to cover all your masking needs. Great stuff!!!

Handy tip: If you're using the dispenser, tape the two halves together otherwise the first time you drop it, the two halves fly apart instantly, launching your nice clean roll of tape onto the floor.

To prevent "bleed  under" , use a small brush and seal the edges of the tape with Future, before painting.  Works great!

Or use a cosmetic burnisher to press down the edges of the tape.

Burnishing the edges works great.  I rigged up a burnishing tool using a hollowed out aluminum handle with a trimmed down chunk of teflon inserted into it.

if your painting canopies,  forget the tape.  too easy for paint to bleed through.  What I like to do is take dental floss and clear nail polish.   Put the floss over the canopy then "weld" it to the canopy with the nailpolish,  don't worry, the floss protects the plastic.   Do you painting,  then drop the canopy in a glass of Cherry Mountain Dew.  Let sit overnight and floss and polish are dissolved, but paint remains perfect.  I have won so many contests with this technique

I'm in the same boat RadMax8.  I've only used blue painters tape.  I picked up some tamiya tape last week and masked and painted a canopy for an apache I'm working on.  Far and away the best one I've ever done.  I'm hooked for life now.  lol.

Duct tape is like the force.  It has a dark side & light side and it holds the universe together.

same here, I was a big blue tape fan,  but now that i have tried Tamiya,  no going back.   Its an amazing product, especially with cockpit glass or any super thin masking areas.
