Decals on top of Decals
Posted by Scouterdave on Friday, April 11, 2014 7:12 PM
My current build calls for decals to be placed on top of other decals (aircraft warning messages, etc. on top of colour schemes). What is the best method to do this? I have used Micro Set and Micro Sol on the base decal, can I use this for the added decals, should I used glue? Thanks for any help.

i would put the micro set on the plastic first,  hold off on the Micro Sol until last.   put decal 1 down.  get it in place and press firmly with damp paper towel or q-tip.   then go ahead and put second decal down.  Now you can use the Micro sol.    You may want to let the first decal dry a few minutes before second one.  You don't want to risk tearing it or moving it when plopping down the second.

also I am convinced Micro Sol needs to start being distributed in a small fat bottle rather than tall narrow bottle.  i have officially spilled 3 bottles of this stuff all over my work bench.   Nothing like a vinegar smelling workbench!

I have bought decal  brands that are limited in the colors printed.  In these, the decals are made in several layers, so you must STACK them to get the completed insignia or whatever.  So decals over decals is quite common, and no need for worry. I have never had any problems using setting solutions with these.  However, I would hold off on solvents unless absolutely needed.  But this is the same rule I use for single decals.  Setting solutions are pretty benign, but decal solvents are pretty drastic, especially something like solvaset.  Don't use them unless you need them.

I usually put down the Future, let it dry, place the decal, let it set then coat with future to seal. After this is dry, I set down the second decal on top, let it set and then coat with Future. It works great and I've had no problems with this process. No other solutions needed.

Hope this helps.

I've done this a few times, but unlike the other posters, I've let the bottom layer decal dry completely before adding the second or subsequent decals.

Let 1st decal dry completely .Clear seal the area or whole model. Then apply the second decal and final seal. Some of the top car and armor modelers do this style.W/aircraft-no problem.

Decals that are on top of drying ones tend to slide off center.Other modelers have no problems until they find out at a contest .It works for me .after market decals work the best.Invest on decals that is best for you.

Very common practice. Just let the decals set and I prefer for them to be dry before putting on the next one. A lot of people don't wait that long but I usually wait at least an hour or so just to make sure I don't accidentally move or mess up the first one.
