Revell Skyraider AD-5, my worst kit ever?
Posted by mgh on Saturday, April 12, 2014 5:49 PM

I was in Hobby Lobby a couple of weeks ago, and saw this kit.  I figure I can never have too many Skyraiders, so picked it up.  With a sticker price of almost $30, I thought it ought to be a decent kit (I used coupon, so did not have to pay the sticker price).

This kit has it all; sink holes, ejector pin marks, flash galore, and an incredible lack of detail, not even an attempt at detail in some areas, such as wheel bays and seats.  Fit has actually been decent, with the exception of the wings to the fuselage.  On this kit the wings do not fit directly to the fuselage, rather there is a piece that goes across the under side of the fuselage, and it had some very large gaps.

No worries about sanding off panel lines when working on seams as there are hardly any to worry about Smile

Seriously, I have had fun building it, and am happy to have markings for the blue paint scheme, but no way, in my opinion, is this kit worth $30!  Maybe I will save the decals for the next Tamiya Skyraider I build.

Ah well, that is my rant for the day Crying

Less than a minute with Google would have turned up this 6 month old thread: cs.finescale.com/.../156716.aspx

Seems like it is the 1970s era Matchbox kit.

Then I'm super glad I did not pick this one up. Revell has been putting out some decent kits in 1/48 like the Eagle, FA18E and the Stearman which I just got today and is a real gem.

If it's not a new tool revel kit the the detail will be pretty crude for today's standards

Like Rob said, this is a Matchbox mold that Revell has acquired and reissued. The Matchbox issues of the kit have been fairly hard to come by for years, so this aspect of it makes it available for a fair price to those who know what they are getting. If you want the greenhouse canopy Spad in 1/48, there are few choices. One could always graft the wings, engine and other better detailed parts from the recently re issued single seater on to this one to improve this kit.

I had a feeling Revell was trying to get one past us, from what I see lately every Revell kit thats a re-issue has major flash issues

Let me just add, that if I remember correctly, there was a build using the fuselage of this kit and the wings from the Monogram Skyraider and after some work the model really turned out well

I think I will wait for someone to come out with a better one. I remember taking a 1/48 105G and slicing it up to make a D. About 6 months after I completed the model, Monogram came out with the D version.

Yes, it was done in the magazine here before the Tamiya single seater kit came out IIRC.
