I am excusive-compulsive so my work bench starts out clean, is trashed with the days project, then I spend the evening cleaning up the mess just so I can do it all again the next day. Maybe that’s why I’m going crazy…

Clean….always starts out that way
My bench is only clean in between builds. But most of the time I do all my work on an A4 size cutting mat surrounded by clutter.
I clean it twice a year, unless we're not having company on either Thanksgiving or Christmas.
bushman32 I clean mine when I can't find a lost part or missing tool. If I am doing metal working (mill or lathe) or working on a wood model I try to clean up (somewhat at least) directly afterwards. Ron W.

Well, let's see. It was clean the day I set it up in 1991 when I moved here. Before that, it was clean in 1966 when I built it in my first house. Before that, it was the kitchen table in my apartment and it was never clean. We always ate at the coffee table in the living room (it was bigger than the kitchen table). In 1946 it was clean the day we took an old broken upright piano apart and used it for a workbench.

Mine is a total wreck. It got so bad a couple of days ago I had to clean it up. I had gotten tired of digging around looking for something. I was working in about 1 square foot. Of course a couple of days later, the clutter has returned.
wait, wait, wait---this is a person who goes by the term "wildman" who keeps his modeling space and his desk "clean and organized"?! What's wrong with this picture?
My modeling space is as clear as it needs to be. I do wish I had a shelf unit I could put on the wall at the front of my table that was just deep enough for my paints. That's where most of my ongoing clutter comes from.
I really try to straighten up every night after modeling. I just do not like sitting down to a mess. My office at work is also very clean and organized. I find when I let it get cluttered, I start making stupid mistakes.

On the Bench:
Organized and somewhat clean for the most part. Unless you count when I am decaling a model. For some reason those little pieces of paper just never make it into the trash bin and just stuck all over the desk.

I clean and organize after each build is complete, which lasts for less than a day. i'm in the middle of a diorama build and it has not only taken over the entire work area but has moved onto the computer desk and now the floor.
I would define my bench as controlled clutter. When things begin to get a little to busy on the bench I'll straighten up a bit.

The only time I keep the workbench even reasonably clean is when I am doing an article on the project and need to take frequent WIP photos. Otherwise, I clean about every third project, including re-doing the contact paper I use as a bench surface.

The only time mine is clean is when I'm inbetween projects. Otherwise, it's just barely organized chaos. lol
On the Bench: 1/196 USS Constitution, a cold drink, and a bit of a mess...
The thing is, you keep putting things away that are needed only to be hunted down again so they stay for most of the time on my bench while working on a particular step. I do clean up are re organize once it gets to be a little too much or I move to another step or model.
Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!

Clean! never gonna happen at my house, if im not messing it up the kids are leaving stuff on it for me to fix. The line at my house is, "if it's broken go put it on dads workbench". the following picture shows my clean workbench, I just made a shelf out of card board on the left side of my bench for all my models in the started Que. Normally I have about one square foot of open space so right now I have a a hugh open work area.

For sure it gets messy while weathering with pigments,but generally I keep it clean and orginized.
let be add on to this discussion, by asking how are so many of you able to keep a workbench clean (other than the post build clean-up)?

Mine is "clean" only when I enter a phase where I don't feel much like modeling. Even then it becomes a catch all for things that belong somewhere else as soon as I get around to moving them.
"Ditto" on the messy workbench.
Definition: something you won't find in my modeling area....
