Lindburg now offering old 1960’s Pyro models
Posted by Radarider on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 3:01 PM

Greetings everyone!

I ordered a Lindburg 1/240 scale USS Olympia battleship model from Amazon.com the other week assuming that it was the old 1970’s Revell mold.  When it arrived I was surprised to find that this USS Olympia was the old 1960’s Pyro version of the USS Olympia.  I also noticed when shopping on Amazon that Lindburg was also offering up their old “Q Ship” model, so with that information and Pyro model in my workshop, I went on line and discovered the Lindburg has apparently reissued a lot of the old Pyro models, including the 1/48 scale pre-WWI aircraft such as the Bristol Boxkite, Avro biplane, Martin-Handasyde and Deperdussin mono-planes to name just a few.  Wow!  Now I don’t have to spend a king ransom on eBay to get my hands on these kits now.  It also appears that Lindburg is also reissuing a lot of their old ship models and other old favorites from way back when.  If anyone from corporate is reading this post, many thanks and keep up the good work!  It is appreciated by this veteran modeler.

On a related subject that I’ll also post in the photo-etch parts category; anyone out there know if someone has picked up the Rosepart line?  I am looking for the wheel and undercarriage super detail kit.  Thanks!

Back in the day Lindberg was a mixed bag.

They did kits that no one else did (well, at least in the area where I lived) like the Stuka and Baka Bomb.

The problem was the styrene was terrible. Thin, brittle, warped.

Thin parts like antenna, gun barrels, landing wheel struts had lots of flash on them.

I destroyed many a part getting it off the sprue or cleaning off the flash.

I have heard of a few other Lindberg releases of old kits.  A series of Pyro kits that I certainly would like to see are the old 1:48 pre-ww1 aircraft.  There are extremely few kits available from this era, and the Pyro kits could actually be built into reasonable models.   I remember the Bleriot X11, the Farman, the Antoinette, and the Bristol Boxkite.  With the Tom's Modelworks WW1 wire wheel sets, these could be detailed to look extremely nice.

If not repopping those, how about some kit mfg coming out with their own line of planes from this era?

Lindberg itself appears to be out of business.  A new company called Round 2 Models ( www.round2models.com ), however, is releasing reissues of a bunch of Lindberg kits - as well as some from Hawk, AMT, and others.

Those 1/48 pre-WWI aircraft kits originated with a small, short-lived British manufacturer called Inpact.  Several of them are on Round 2's list for 2014 - along with the four 1920s and 30s British fighters that Inpact also released.  For their day they were terrific kits, and they certainly still have the potential to be turned into outstanding models.

That Pyro Olympia was a real dog, even in its day.  Worse, for a while Pyro was selling it in a box labeled "U.S.S. Maine."  The two ships scarcely resembled each other.  But back in the '50s, few people cared about such things.

Bravo Round 2 Models.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Hi :

Round 2 has been the lucky recipient of LINDBERG'S whole line . As to what we'll see , well , who knows . I do know the old PYRO " Tuna Clipper " was ,  according to my uncle ,  dead on .He owned six of the real thing . There many kits in this line .

Remember they are responsible for the large ROBT.E. LEE and NATCHEZ riverboat models too ! Both when they were PYRO and then LIFE-LIKE !

This reminds me  .How many of you shipbuilders built AURORA"S " BLACK FALCON " " Pirate Ship "? You can now find an iteration of it at stores that sell fish tank supplies and decorations .How do I know ? Well , you have to promise not to laugh .

I wanted one to replace the one I built years ago  .I won't pay a $ 100.00 bucks for it though .Trip to pet store for schnauzer grooming . Walking through fish tank deco aisle . Lo and Behold ! a sunken pirate ship , Broken in half on a reef  .Why it's the Black falcon . Says so right on the stern piece !

I couldn't believe my old eyes .I bought it , took it home and proceeded to repair same .( wasn't hard to do .The manufacturer had cut it on plank lines ! ). Yeah , stupid I know   .BUT I now have a new version of the same old ship ! Only it looks better ! It was fun to do too . I have wondered about AURORA'S version of the " Q " Ship . I wonder if we'll ever see it again .

Last comment on this subject , Many of my friends are trying to pre - order the new ? ROUND-2 models of the old LINDBERG " Bobtail Cruiser ' and that " Q  " ship . I wonder how long it will be before we actually see them ?
