A good night at IPMS
Posted by stikpusher on Thursday, May 22, 2014 7:40 PM

Last week the stars and planets must have been in alignment for me. Last Friday was the monthly OC IPMS Chapter meet. The first one that I had been able to attend this year due to scheduling and other reasons.  My first good turn of events in the evening was finding this kit for only $5 that another member was selling. I had built the original release when first issued some 30+ years ago, but it was later damaged beyond repair and I had been looking for a replacement... $5 is too good a deal to pass up...

Then an even bigger score. Each month there are several items raffled off for fundraising. Often some great new kits are up for grabs. Well the new 1/48 Academy F-4B was up there and I really want that kit something fierce... so most of my rafgfle tickets went in that one... but two went in for a 1/350 Tamiya HMS Prince of Wales... and I won it!!! a huge kit for a $2 investment

and to top off the night, my Monogram F-20 that I finished a couple of months back took 3rd place in Master Catagory of the monthly contest. Considering the competition that was no easy feat.

So I came away with some nice additions to my stash and a nice feeling for doing well in the contest again.... model building life is good... Toast

Ya know I heard some pretty bad horror stories about IPMS years before I joined. Rivet counters and nit pickers. Complainers and whiners. Take the fun out of it all. But I can tell you now that joining up was one of teh best decisions that I ever made regarding this hobby. Some really great guys there, an incredibe wealth of modeling knowledge, and really fun times to be had.

Stik, Wow! It was your night, indeed. Congrats. Great looking model, too. I'm glad your skill was recognized.

A hobby hat trick! LOL! Of course my wife had to take a swipe at me when I came home- "what did you win this time?" "Only" third place?" ... of course she did not see the two additions to the stash....Whistling

WTG Stickpusher !     was that the IPMS show in Melborne ,Florida  ?   I was there for that one and I too won 2 quality 1/48 scale planes in the raffle there.  if it was the same show, I'm sorry to not have made your aquaintence there.

No, I am in the Orange County California IPMS Chapter... Take I-10 all the way west until you hit Pacific Coast Hiway, then turn south.Cool

http://www.ipmsoc.org/

Duke Maddog (AKA Mark Deladuka) on here is also a member of that club and invited me to attend back in summer '07.

haha, love those directions "hit PCH, then turn south"

We don't have an IPMS chapter near enough to us to attend every month. I really wish we did, though.  Like you, I heard all of the horror stories about IPMS members. I avoided attending contests and Nats for years because of them, in fact.

Then, around the time that the Nats were held in Va Beach and Columbus, Ohio, we started attending the shows "in our radius" and those two Nats. And I have NEVER bumped into a single person that fit any of those stereotype stories in these six or seven years, after dozens of shows.

No rip-off vendors, no "smelly guys", no "loud rivet counters", etc,,,,,,,,,,heck, I make a joke out of it,,,,,called an online friend over whom we had just met in person for the first time,,,,,you should have seen his face when I pointed at a Naval diorama and told him it was inaccurate (I could tell what he was thinking,,,,,haha),,,,,,,,then I told him that the Navy BrownShirt was performing actual work and "they never did any of that",,,,,,all 5 of us near there bust out laughing, and then complimented that dio. (They all knew I was a Blue Shirt Marine)

I think a room with 12 or 20 modelers in it every month would be a blast,,,,,but, most of my neighbors are cows and horses,,,,,so, the annual contests will have to do for a while longer.

Rex, it really is fun to be a member of a great club... even better to be in two (AMPS has a chapter here as well). And we have not one but two excellent well stocked LHS nearby. All I hear on here about how isolated folks are  hobbywise just has no meaning to me in reality. I can empathize for those who are not so blessed. But I have nothing to gauge it by- except for perhaps when I was on mobilized and on deployment for 18 months. But that was only temporary.

But yeah, if anybody here takes I-10 to PCH then turns south, hit me up. I am about an hour south of that intersection. There is USS Iowa and RMS Queen Mary between here and there.

Jay Jay

I was at the Melbourne show last week and entered a couple of models. I must say it was a bit weak for a regional meet but did score some great buys and a couple of trophies.

Congrats on the trophies.  I was awed by 95 % of the entrants and am aspiring to do as well someday.

IDK about the weak show since that was my first one ever, but I came home with an armload of model deals including the 2 i won in the raffle.  Are you a member of the local chapter there ?    may attend a meeting to see what it's like but it's a hike from Port Orange.

my colorado springs club auction is next week. didn't get much at denver club auction last month but who knows. last year i got a pair of 1/72 SA-10s for $15 total. they retail for $70 a piece. all that really means is all the money i saved will probably be used to buy the 3d radar vehicle,

Maybe we can meet up at the Orlando show in September then. I am about an hour's drive from there and plan on attending.

Sounds like a great plan!  I attended the Modelpalooza show last year and it was pretty good. Tons of entries and a HUGE vendor area.

Stikpusher, I once belonged to IPMS Orange County until I moved to Phoenix in 2004.

Oh really now?! Well I did not join up until 2007. But we probably know many of the same folks there.
