Whatever you do, don't use actual glass fiber optic cable.  It's difficult to work with and dangerous.  The fiber is too thin to provide adequate illumination for scale modeling anyway.

I bought some plastic fiber from these guys a few years ago...

I am looking at installing fiber-optic lighting into an old 1/650 scale USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) model. Since I have never worked with fiber-optics does anyone know of any good basic fiber-optic reference material to get me started. I has been looking all over the internet and although there is much info on the subject, it all seems rather confusing to me. thanks.
