Cadet Chuck

Yes, I have had the same experience , which is why I avoid using Future.

I'm curious why you would say that. This problem is not about the product, but the technique. If you were using some other gloss product in just one spot, it would change the sheen as well.

I've always though that the best solution would be to use gloss paints.

Immediately after painting flat military colors, we usually decal, then apply a wash. A flat paint isn't conducive to either of these, so after the initial paint dries we have to apply a gloss topcoat. Then we wait for that to dry, do our decal and wash, then after that dries, we have to make it flat again. It would be much easier if we had military colors with a gloss finish.

I've tried mixing Future with Acrylics (Model Master) for a glossier finish and that sort of works, but it's tricky to get the mixture right and to apply it satisfactorily.

And that's why I thought it would be O.K. I remember reading various articles about brushing or spraying just the area where the decal goes and then dulling over it after the decals are applied.

I then figured since I changed the texture between the two surfaces, one flat and one kinda glossy, that they would now never match with another clear on top of them. I have not used Future before for this specific application, only using it for clear parts. I think I will stick to using gloss paints and then a dull coat or as suggested, spraying the whole kit with a gloss instead of one small area.

By the way, love the kit! Added engine lights and front amber "headlights". As soon as I can access my SD card I'll throw up some pics. Rob, have you posted your build? I need to go look.

Thanks again everyone.

robiwon, I actually just did both wings of the exact model you are working on just late last week. Yup, gotta say, I sprayed the whole surface with Future before laying down the decals. Moebius decals are hard to work with at best of times. But, my results were ok thus far.

There might be another problem,I have heard numerous modelers speak of only glossing the area where the decals go with no problem.I myself have done it on armor where there are only a couple of stars or German Crosses, either by brush or a quick shot by airbrush with no Ill effects.

Hi;

I have learned ,as have others, that it's best to clear coat the whole model, then come back with flat or semi-gloss overcoat.

I'll third that.  Whether you apply the Future by hand or with an airbrush, cover the whole model.  I learned that the same way you just did with this model.  As Gandalf said, "Short cuts make long delays".

When you apply a clear coat like Future you are changing the texture of the paint.  So, like plastic said, you really need to apply Future to the entire model.

That usually happens if you only brush the area to be decaled. I either brush the entire model or extend well past the decal area feathering out as I go.

What went wrong? A Future question

I just finished building the Moebius TOS Cylon Raider kit. I used a light grey primer as the base coat. The kit only has two decals, one on each wing tip. As I had used a flat for the color coat and knowing decals don't like flats, I brushed a small amount of Future where the decals were to go. I let it dry 24 hours. I applied the decals and waited another 24 hours. I sprayed the area with a flat clear coat. After that had dried I could still see a difference in sheen where the Future was. I shot a second coat of clear, and still the difference in sheen was there and still very noticeable.

I did fix the issue though. I used the now dried out paper backing from each decal to make a mask from blue painters tape. After "de-stickying" the tape I applied it over each decal. I re shot the base color and removed the masks. No more sheen. I then re weathered the wing to match.

So, my question is, why didn't my dull coat (Testors Lusterless Flat) flatten the Future?
