Favorite specialty colors for WW II subjects
Posted by BarrettDuke on Thursday, July 17, 2014 7:16 AM
I'm always on the lookout for that "just-right" color for some detail work on a model. So far, I have only worked on German armor and related pieces, but here are the colors that I feel have added the most to the detail level of my pieces: 1. Dirt: Polly Scale--Great for putting on that fine layer of dirt, especially thinned down for filters. I'll be sad when I can't find this color anymore. Anyone know of a good replacement? 2. Oily Black: Polly Scale--A really good base color for the track sections hanging on the sides of tanks. Ditto on not being able to find it much longer. Anyone know of a good replacement? 3. Light Flesh,70.928: Vallejo--A great base color for skin. Forget Tamiya's "Flesh" color. 4. Beige Red, 70.804: Vallejo--Great for mixing with "Light Flesh" for skin color variations. 5. Old Wood, A.Mig 036: Mig--Great as a base color for wooden handles made of pine. 6. Panzer Interior Buff: Model Master--A great color for the interior of German armor, though I wish I could find its equivalent in a less glossy finish. Anyone got a suggestion? 7. Sky Grey: Tamiya--Great for dry brushing places to simulate worn areas on metal surfaces 8. Grime: Floquil--Really good to simulate that light color accumulation of dust, dirt, etc. on surfaces. Again, I'll miss it. Any good replacements, anyone? 9. Leather Brown: 70.871: Vallejo--A respectable looking leather color. 10. Rust, 71.080: Vallejo--It's their Model Air version, but I like to use it as a base color for adding some rust effects. I know I'm asking folks to share their secrets for success, but any takers? What are your favorite specialty colors for WW II subjects?

Since my hobby shop closed down back in May of this year, I found another in my area I never knew existed. He has a small stock of Polly Scale paints. Doesn't hurt for me to take a look see.

You may want to look for model train stores in your area, too. They will be the last local sources for Polly Scale and Floquil, IMHO.

Unfortunately the hobby store that closed back in May was the only one in my area that sold hobby trains. I'll keep an eye out though.

Sounds good. It's getting harder and harder to find those colors, too. I buy every bottle I come across as I travel. I have four bottles of the "oily black." :-) But only one bottle of the "dirt." :-(

You might want to check out some of the Vallejo 'Panzer Aces' colors. Some of the sets are keyed to weathering and details instead of uniforms. And they are available individually too. Probably won't see them too often in a store rack, but not too hard to get off the internet.

BarrettDuke, would you search online stores for the PollyScale colors if I typed up the list of stores that have some left?

There are six places left online that carry some of it. Plus Amazon and Ebay, of course. They don't have the selection left that they had when I first started telling people about the links,,,,,,,so there must be some people still buying them.

Micro Mark introduced their own branded 'replacement' for some of the Polly S / Floquil colors last year. Called MicroLux paints. They currently have about 6 or 8 colors, mostly popular railroading colors and unfortunately not grime or oily black (yet?)

I've yet to try them, but did happen to stop into the local train hobby store the other day, and was surprised to see some of the Microlux paints in stock there. Owner told me they can't keep them in stock, so assume they are pretty good. I read somewhere that Vallejo is making them for Micro Mark, I think.

Enjoyed your post, btw. Some good paint color/type tips ....thanks.

Thanks, Greg. I'll be on the lookout for the Microlux. It would be great to find a dependable replacement. If Vallejo is behind it, that would be great. I bought a bottle of their "smoke" color a while back, thinking that might replace the "oily black," but haven't tried it yet.

Tarn, Sorry I missed this post when you placed it. Yes, indeed. Thanks for the offer. I would be delighted to know who still carries some of the Polly Scale on line!

Tanker. I really like the Floquil paints, too. It's my understanding they have also been discontinued. Am I mistaken?

It is also my understanding that Floquil has been discontinued by Testors. Along with Pactra, PolyScale, and ColorArtz (the last of which I'd never heard of).

Based on internet posts I've read.

If you find a replacement for Dirt color, hope you let me know. It's been decades, but I used to love that stuff. Also, hope you let us know how Vallejo Smoke plays out, Duke. I use Vallejo, will have to see if it exists in my paint inventory. :)

Yes, they are discontinued, but, here are seven places that are selling them off. Note that some of them have sold down to less colors than they had when I started buying the paints, after so many people declared them "all gone." (I bought over 500 bottles since those posts started up)

Internet Hobbies  www.internethobbies.com/inhobpain.html

Internet Model Trains www.internettrains.com/.../merchant.mvc

Megahobby  www.megahobby.com/1ozbottlepollyscalerailroadacryliccolors-2.aspx

Sprue Brothers  store.spruebrothers.com/.../1822.htm

Hobbymasters  www.hobbymasters.com/polly-scale-military-acrylics-paint-1-2-oz.aspx

Tower Hobbies Floquil Enamel  www3.towerhobbies.com/.../wti0091p

Tower Hobbies PollyScale  www3.towerhobbies.com/.../wti0091p

This link I just got the other day, and have not ordered from them yet Train Liquidators www.trainliquidators.com/.../index.php

in addition, you will find vendors on Amazon and Ebay, using Floquil , Floquil Polly Scale and the misspellings of Polly Scale , and Aeromaster (on Ebay, both types, Acrylic and Enamel)

I hope you can find the colors you need this way,,,,,,,,,if not, I do have three local places to get some of the colors, as long as the one closest doesn't send them back to the parent store, 3 hours away.

Tarn, Thanks for taking the time to list these. That is really helpful. I'll check them out for my favorite colors and see if I can stock up, too--but not 500 bottles worth, Yikes. Barrett
