Ya know, I wish we had an entire section devoted to topics like this.  Maybe a sticky in each genre devoted to new stuff.  Cool post.

-and I haven't heard of a wild catfish either!

The Wildcatfish was a one of a kind prototype, inspired by the success of the float-plane version of the Japanese Zero fighter early in the Pacific war. It had given the Japanese air cover in areas thought otherwise impossible, without airbases or carriers. So the US tried to copy it, without realizing the factors that led it to be successful - mainly lack of serious air opposition.

As the Japanese would find later, despite more tinkering, when faced with 'normal' front line fighter aircraft, the float-planes were horribly vulnerable. As it turned out, the US found that CB battalions were very good at carving airfields out of the jungle quickly, along with a massive carrier construction program, made such expedients unnecessary,

Those factors, along with its poor performance, led the Wildcatfish to the dustbin of history after its single prototype.
