Monzo virtual "model kits" on Android & iOS, including Revell
Posted by Miles Prower on Friday, November 7, 2014 9:08 PM

Has anyone else tried Monzo, the virtual model-building app for Android and iOS?

You assemble, paint, and decal virtual model kits that are 3D-rendered on-screen. There are "in house" Monzo-branded virtual kits to choose from, but you can also purchase virtual kits from Revell. Although the model kits are virtual, the money isn't — and some of the virtual kits cost nearly as much as the real kits.

Before I saw the in-app pricing, my first thought was, "What a neat way to kill some time while waiting in line somewhere or sitting on a train!" Plus, there's the added benefit of testing out the assembly of a Revell kit you might want to build in real life. But once I saw the pricing, I thought, "No way in heck am I going to spend as much on a virtual kit as a real one!" Sure, a real kit requires lots of extras — paints, tools, glues, blood, sweat, etc. — that add to the cost, but still, I can't get myself to spend $10-$20 on a virtual kit!

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone else here has tried it.

I wonder if the virtual wait time for paint to dry is actually as long as it is in real life.

Im not going to stare at a screen for two days waiting for primer to dry!!

And for me it's probably still possable to glue my fingers to some part !

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

What's the point of a virtual model kit ?  I want something I can hold in my hand and put on a shelf to admire  ( or curse at ).....seems silly to me.

I'm finally retired. Now time I got, money I don't.

I use pc's to extend my model-making:

Rescaling drawings, preparing AutoCAD files for the laser cutter, generating .STL files for 3-D prototyping, maintaining my club hobby website, organising my club's Model Show, etc,

I even do some work at work on them... I then go home & do some analogue modelling!

I downloaded and did the demo kit. Other than that single kit, I'll be spending real money on real kits.

I know I enjoy all of the reasons only to do "real" kits and I do enjoy getting glue in the cut on my finger I just got!  And while I won't be doing virtual kits, thre are those who will because of various limitations.  Some people loose the ability to use their hands or are unable to properly read the instructions.  For these individual the virtual kits could be a dream come true!
