Landing Gear UP
Posted by home_planit on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 1:48 PM

Hi All,

I'm building an Academy 1:48 F4U Corsair.  I want to display it with landing gear up.  As a returning modeler, I recall most Monogram and Revel kits giving you the option.  Neither the Academy or Tamiya kits provide this option.  So, I'd like to get some ideas on the cleanest way to "convert" a landing gear down kit into a landing gear up kit.  Personally, I think the Corsair looks best while flying, like most aircraft, since that is what they're designed to do!

Any input would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Nicolas Ladizinsky

Again... glue gear doors to wheel wells. This is a double post btw... :)

Haven't built the Academy Corsair......yet. But, if it's as good as the Tamiya offering, then simply gluing the gears shut should be the fix. An easy way to make sure that they line up correctly when you glue them is to stuff the gear wells with some tissue paper (to keep the gear doors from falling into the empty cavity) before you glue the doors in place. That should work for the tail wheel doors, too. Make sure you add a pilot in the cockpit (the canopy can still be opened or closed). Also, a blurred prop would be ok; or, you could add an electric motor and a battery to spin the prop.

If the kit's gear doors don't line up too well, you might need to resort to some plastic surgery with some plastic card and make your own gear doors. Good Luck on it!

Thanks much.  The Academy is not nearly as nice as the Tamiya. It's illuminating, however, to build the same model by two different kit manufacturers.  The pilot figure had to be purchased as an aftermarket as well.  Making progress though.

Brand new to the forum thing.  Inadvertently posted twice when I didn't see the first post posted.  Again, glue alone will not keep the doors flush with the wing surface. They fall into the empty cavity without added support.  Neither kit provides support, i.e. ledge to rest the gear doors onto.

I've decided to fill the cavity with a light weigh putty to support the gear doors while gluing.

Thanks
