Purchasing off Shapeways site
Posted by BLACKSMITHN on Friday, January 2, 2015 9:03 AM

Anybody ever had any experience doing this? The reason I ask is that I have a project that will involve obtaining several 1/87 scale MTVRs and the only ones I can find for a halfway reasonable price are made by a guy over on Shapeways through 3D printing-- roughly $30, but I'd have to scratchbuild the beds of the vehicles myself. I know what 3D printing is and I've browsed the Shapeways site before, but never purchased anything there and I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience doing so, good, bad, or indifferent. Especially helpful would be insight into the quality of the item(s) purchased.

i've not bought from shapeways, i can't help, but those who i've talked to have said they are ok. I got a Eleanor GT500K that was 3D printed, and the striations are quite bad (horizontal lines on every panel).

we had a demo from a 3d print place for my ship club. i made a nice winch and a nice capstan in 3D and saved to a file they could print from. I was not impressed. granted this wasn't going to be a mold for a resin run but, for the time spent building in 3D, i could have made a single real one that would look much better. Bigger pieces are better but we had to clean out the gear grooves in the winch and it wasn't worth it.

Thanks, guys. The prospective client got a look at the price and decided to bail on the project. Can't say I blame them.
