And I was looking at the back cover, which has an ad for the new Academy 1/48th F-4C Phantom II. The picture for the built kit looks awesome, until you start looking closely at the details. And, if you do, you'll notice that the left main landing gear has an INCREDIBLE amount of toe-out on the wheel. I would estimate that it's close to 30 degrees. How can the builder of that kit do such fine work, and mess up that one aspect so badly? I'm surprised that Academy allowed that picture to be used. Anybody else notice this?

You should look at Monogram's latest release box art for it's 48th Phantom. The auxiliary air intakes just behind the nose cone weren't installed by the builder (see completed model pics on the box sides), and the computer generated art for the box top copied the error.

Nah.... Just noticed that glaring fault on the model. The rest of the plane looks outstanding. Just not sure how they let that wheel go. Seems it would be easy enough to fix. How could you not notice it (as the builder)?

The problem might not be with the builder but with the photographer. Perhaps the builder surrendered the model to the magazine and then they gave it to the photographer. Somewhere in the shipping process, the damage may have been done and the photographer didn't know enough about planes to even notice something like that. Just a guess, but when organizations get bigger, they tend to compartmentalize processes, and if there isn't someone watching over quality control, these things happen.

Not an expert, but I read a lot of posts about the Dragon Black Label Series, which seems to be really off when it comes to accuracy in the eyes of lots of modelers. So it definitely happens, companies do fall short.

That's not a mistake. That's the little known main-gear steering system, used to get around tight corners at small forward airfields.  All my models have that.  Stick out tongue

Hah hah! That's a good one, Dirk! Three-Wheel steering! Wonder if it's AWD, too?
