HMCS SNOWBERRY PLATINUM EDITION BUILD - New Member
Posted by GreybeardGunner on Friday, January 23, 2015 9:16 AM

Hi Everyone:  After a 30-odd year hiatus from model building, I've decided to jump back in with both feet. I purchased the REVELL HMCS SNOWBERRY platinum edition and am preparing my workroom/tools for the build.  I'm in the RCN based in Halifax, N.S. Canada and thought it was an appropriate platform to work on.  Since I've been away for so long, I'd appreciate any input other members may have regarding this build.  One thing I've NEVER done before, is use an airbrush...however, my research has indicated that this is the way to go. Any painting technique advice?  Also, I'd like to know what tools-of-the-trade others are using.  Thanks for any help.  If anyone is interested, I'll post some pics of the build as it progresses. I plan to build out of the box.

Cheers.

Welcome Shawn,

We have similar backgrounds as I returned to the hobby about 2 years ago.  I was stunned as to how the hobby progressed over the hiatus years, but the big attraction to me is learning all the "new" techniques and I attempt at least 1 on every model I currently build.

As to advice on airbrushing;  don't mess with cheap ones. i bought 2 and it was a waste of money.  I finally got a good one with a 40 % off coupon at a craft store ( Michaels ) and there is no comparison.  Mine is a gravity fed Badger Patriot and now I am painting much much better with it.  My compressor is one that I used as a carpenter with a 2 gallon tank on wheels. I installed a water/oil separator and a good regulator on it and it suits me just fine, albeit it's noisy, so if noise is a problem , you should get a quality "airbrush" comperssor. This is one area where you get what you pay for.

Peruse the airbrushing/painting section here in the forums for wonderfull tips and techniques and with practice, you'll be painting like a pro.

I'm finally retired. Now time I got, money I don't.

Shawn- check out the painting and airbrushing forum, in the Tools, Techniques and Reference Materials section.  A lot of threads there are about airbrush selection, operation, and painting with an airbrush.  Folks there can help you.

Welcome to the Forums Shawn!  Glad to have you aboard!

You've come to the right place for help and info.  To find out tons of info on airbrushing, go to the "Airbrushing" section of the Forums. The guys are very knowledgeable and extremely helpful.

Good luck with your build.  Looking forward to seeing and following your WIP.

Good Morning:

Thanks for all the positive comments and suggestions, I really appreciate it.  I've not had the opportunity to explore this site to extensively yet, but I will spend some time doing so in the near future. In the meantime, please bear with me as I go through the 'learning pains'.   There's a lot of talent here and I'm sure I'll be asking for plenty of help during those 'moaning moments' of the build.  Cheers all.
