Depends on where you're at in the world. White lights were authorized while on work ups and transit, but once we hit our station and started flying combat ops, red lenses were mandatory, because they're a whole lot harder to see from afar than a white light, even if diffused by the plastic nose cone. Sucks too, because they also limit how much you can see, even when working with them up close. And, if we went to darken ship , or deceptive lighting, you better not be caught with a flashlight on deck.

Any carrier sailors in here?--marshalling wand colors

I have a question about the lit marshalling wands used at night on Navy ships such as carriers or cruiser helicopter decks. Are there different color wands for different purposes, and if so, what are they? Are colors dictated by a Navy specification, or can they vary between ships? Anyone know?

Thanks,

Chris
