Ok, modelers. This has probably been asked before, but...........

What's in the background while you're building? For me, it's some music. A few years ago, my wife bought me an iPod Classic (120GB) for Christmas. So, I put all of my music on it (all 7900+ songs - even with that much music on it, it's only half full), and put it on random play. I hear everything from Bluegrass to Mozart while I'm relaxing at the modeling bench. I've tried to watch TV while building, but noticed that I watched the TV more than I modeled, so that wasn't gonna work. Music seems seems to be the happy medium.

Yeah, I seem to recall a similar thread, which is buried in the back somewhere...

Still, I generally listen to music (on my headphones), and I try to listen to music that represents the subject.

For instance:  While building a Stuka, I listened to German military marches and songs from WWII.  While building a C-47, I listened to Big Band.

It kinda helps set the mood you could say.  Smile

Got to be 60s rock and roll.  I have a small portable stereo that can accept CDs, MP3, and FM for the local oldies station.

You know, that's a great idea. I never thought about "theme" music. I might hafta try that! Cool!!

That's the one thing that I wish that Apple would've included on the iPods - an FM tuner. But, I guess that would've defeated the purpose of the iPod in the first place.

I have a little bit of everything on my iPod - Flatt & Scruggs, Nora Jones, Mozart, Cowboy Troy, TobyMac, Francesca Battistelli, Casting Crowns, Hank Senior (you ain't country if you don't know who that is), Quarterflash, Rush, Del McCoury, Marty Stuart, AC/DC, Avril Levigne, etc. Love waiting to see what comes up next on random play......

My workbench is in mt aprtment living room so I usually either fire up my Zune or the Zune software on my computer and let it play on random which is nice. When my fiance is home and if she isn't working on one of her Gundams I usually listen to what ever she happens to be watching on TV or what ever game she might be playing on the game stations.

Trancid does it for me at the modeling bench, keeps me in the zone via IHeart Radio.  And yes I don't fit the typical age profileWink .When that need has passed,   I will also mix it up with a more mature  selection of  music and talk radio.

I listen to mostly classical on FM 89.3 on the old Boom Box.  Toss in some CDs with a little "Il Volo" , Opera, and Military Marches.  Panzerlied is my favorite.

I listen either to my iPod or to my music playlist on YouTube. It kind of depends upon my mood and modeling subject. I plug either device into an old stereo that belonged to my kids when they were younger. Or I can pop one of my CDs in there too. Some of my music mixes better with certain types of modeling than others... But definitely music. I hate listening to people talking...

Generally, nothing. My TV is in the other room and would have to be turned up pretty loud to hear it. I have reached the point where I rarely ever listen to my stereos in the house or in the car. I tinker with these model to get my mind away from other things in the world, the very last thing I would do is listen to the drivel of a radio talk show.

I like listening to Cardinals baseball when it's on; I've been binge playing a cd called "For Freedom Alone", which is a collection of Scottish songs promoting the independence movement a little while ago. Otherwise, it's a motley collection of music from the mp3 or 89.9 WEVL out of Memphis (a great little radio station!).

I'm an 80's metalhead!  Usually Iron Maiden or AC/DC.  If I'm in a more "mello" mood...Pink Floyd.

Sometimes, during football season, I'll stream a Gators or a Dolphins game that isn't televised.

It all depends.

I've got different podcasts I listen throughout the week and since I can't listen to them while writing papers or reading for classes I usually listen to them while I workout, model, or driving to campus. One of them is C-SPAN radio's -Washington Today (I'm a political science major), which comes out daily. Another one is NPR's Intelligence squared debates which are quite interesting, and lastly Freakonomics radio, both of which come out usually just one a week.

When I've already listened to all the current podcasts its whatever I feel like on Pandora...a couple of my favorites are Lynyrd Skynyrd radio, Die Walkure radio, Rock Road to Dublin Radio, Temptations radio, Daft Punk radio, and Miles Davis radio.

I listen to music on my ipod-nano. It has an FM radio tuner also, allowing me to listen to ballgames and talk radio.

I've recently started to take my ear-buds out when working with small, fiddly bits though. That way I can hear the part ticking off something when it shoots across the roomBig Smile

I usually have Pandora playing in the background while I'm checking out all the posts here. I expect that's what will be playing in the background when I get my work area finished and I can get back to the hard work of enjoying myself. I shuffle through a list of stations. They are:

The Allman Brothers Band

Led Zeppelin

Pink Floyd

Rush

Wilson Pickett

The Sonics

The Stooges

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

Scott Joplin

Ludwig Van Beethoven

The Beatles

Black Sabbath

Cheap Trick

Mountain

Waylon Jennings

John Coltrane

Miles Davis

I keep the volume just loud enough to cover the muffled cries for help coming from the basement

I must be an anomaly.

My computer is also on my modelling bench so i normally put on a DVD and let it play. I have to make sure it's something i've seen before - otherwise i do start watching it.

Normally it's a movie that i really enjoy and have seen dozens of times, that way i can tune in and out without wondering what happened in the last 10 minutes and always rewinding to find out.

like others have said, depends on my mood and what i am building. if i steam music through my laptop it's classical, especially russian, surf music, top 40ish, new age or movie scores. i will tailor movie scores to what i am building THE BLUE MAX when building planes. sometimes i have nothing on. i will have football on the tv in season but generally don't pay attention.

I have XM radio so I usually listen to classic album rock, classical music or baseball when in season.  Sometimes I fire up the CD player with some music.

Thanks Raualduke

I grew up in the 70's on radio rock (both the soft and hard variety);  southern rock and classic outlaw country, which my sisters' biker boyfriends were into; punk rock and early synthesizer-based music (Devo mostly), which my intellectual cousins were into; and, easy listening music and southern soul (Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, etc), which my father was very much into. I began playing the electric guitar as a teen, and a friend from Germany turned me on to metal, which coincided with the rise of thrash and speed metal, so I became somewhat of a metal head. That only lasted a few years though, as my tastes were still evolving. I briefly studied music in college, where I began to appreciate various forms of jazz and classical. I've also always had a natural affinity for American blues music, which is probably my personal favorite, if I have a favorite
