Seems to me ;
I built the Revell version as a kid and the Renwal one . Now here 's where I shoot everyone down . I have the same two kits now .The Renwal Hull is slightly larger than the Revell offering . I have packed the Revell hull side with Clay and done a mold of it with my Vacu-Form . Fits perfect !
Thanks for everyone's comments on this. You all have given me a lot to think about. Build it............don't build it. If I save it, what then? Who benefits when I'm gone? Will they just toss it? I doubt it will wind up putting the kids through college! I guess it will probably just sit on the shelf until one day.................................
It doesn't matter that you ARE the best, but that you DID your best!
You can sometimes do a quick price check on eBay if you can find the same item listed. That may inform your decision to build or not. It's insane what some old kits sell for, especially those in relatively pristine condition!

Revell reissued the kit as the George Washington about 2 years back. You're better off finding one of those and keeping this one as a souvenir. I'm pretty sure the release you have was the only one with the clear hull half. The later issues had a non clear side that you had to open up to see the interior details.
Offduty Opened this thread and looked at the picture and BAM, I remember building this as a child in the 60s. Funny how a picture can take you back so fast.

Ditto that. Had to have been late 60's when I built this. Odd thing, I was thinking about this kit in the not so distant past.
At any rate, what an incredible find for you, Mailwalker.
Pretty cool,I remember having a similar USS George Washington sub like that.
That is incredible!! Yeah, I would have a tough time opening that, but the temptation would be insane
And there lies the great debate. Do I keep it in the box or do I build it (and save the empty box). I've done both plus I've thrown away a lot of the empty boxes (I would have needed a large storage place just to save all the empty boxes over the 68 years of building).
The only answer is "whatever YOU want to do". Now, I build them and save the box art. I put it in the file with the research I've done on the kit. Doesn't take up a lot of room unless it's a very large kit, then there's a separate storage box for those.
I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.
Cool! Wish I cold find one!
WOW ! I remember drooling over this kit in the window of the hobby shop in Cleveland when I was a litttle kid. I never could collect enough pop bottles to buy it, even now LOL
I'm finally retired. Now time I got, money I don't.
What an awesome find!
Geez, I'd be tempted to keep it- or at least find out what a collector would pay for it....good for you for building it though.

Great find and in pristine condition too.
I'm gonna say that model dates from the 60s. The box art style alone is from that era. And I do not remember coming across Renwal kits in the stores after the early 70s or so... That is a great find!

Here is my newest free model. We have been cleaning out my late grandmothers house and this was found in a closet. It seems fairly old, 70's maybe 80's? It's all there, some people say keep it in the box (collector), I say all that plastic isn't doing anyone any good stuck in the box! I think I will build it for my dad who was on subs of this class in the late 60's early 70's.
