What does a Model , Well built , say to you ?
Posted by tankerbuilder on Thursday, April 30, 2015 4:10 PM

Here's another effort to improve the species .

Now , don't get me wrong fellas , I don't mean to be critical at anytime . It's just I've seen too many modelers go home from a contest and just give up for months on end . Why ?

Well there's this . How well did they build it ? Does the deck on that French Battleship have gaps between it and the hull ? How about the Dihedral on that DC - 9 ? Is it way to pronounced ? Gee , Look at that tank , It's got to be buried in mud , But is it , No !

With all the modelers around here , we need to do a better job in helping each other .

I make sharp comments once in a while to say , Pay attention !

Remember I taught a class in this subject for almost four years and I have some National winners that came from my classes . Sometimes a modeler needs a push , sometimes a shove .To their thinking processes.

You can look on these pages in all the mags and what do you really see . Many schools of style and many schools of method . Are they wrong ? NO ! It's just that lately I have seen an overabundance of the very things I point out from time to time .

Does the landing gear on that B.F.109 look to short ? Well , look at the build sheet . Don't you see , he said the gear was shortened to represent a fully fueled and armed aircraft prior to take-off !

What about the tank that has tabletop showing through an otherwise great job and from someone who knows better ? Do you just pass him over without gently saying that he must've forgot to put in some baffles to prevent just that ?

See ? There are times we have to speak up . I make mistakes or err on the arty side once in a while too . It's what makes this hobby fun . Can't be any worse than me using a grey paint that had some red in it by mistake .My Butler class D.E looked Pink in the light  .Did I change it ? Heck no , I worked on it to long when I discovered the error . It was fun to build and I always waited for the comments and told everyone the ship was completely crewed by W.A.V.E.S. !

I have just been seeing many beautiful builds to me " Ruined " by an avid over - emphasis on the negative . How about a rusty P.T. Boat ? Weren't they built of wood ? When a model says to me , Look at me , Look at the work that went into my presence here and look how fine the line was drawn between realism and art !

Well ? Why do I say that ? It's simple , I like models , all kinds and all types . I just feel some call to me and others shout at me . I might be hard of hearing , but I ain't that bad yet ! Model On !  T.B.

Not to be trite but usually it makes me think "Wow I wish I could build like that!"

Using the terms "mistakes" and "err on the arty side" in the same sentence, eh?

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

It could be any one of a number of facets that cause a model to "speak" to me. Personally, I'm a sucker for innovative weathering techniques, high levels of detail, and/or oddball (meaning out of the ordinary in any sense) subject matter.

Tankerbuilder, I'm not really sure I understand the point you're making. Are you saying that we should tell people when they've made a mistake on their models, or, are you saying that if you make a mistake, don't worry about it?

Depends on the person and the model. For instance the BUFF that I am working on right now well lets just say I am glad it was free. However with that being said I know where I screwed up and freely admit it (like scribing the panel lines to deeply).

Naw !

What I meant was there is a big area here for understanding and helping in a constructive way . That  , Plus it's time to enjoy anything we build and if someone critisises it without being asked ( and is not judging it ) Let it go in one ear and out the other . Shoot that is easy for me .  At my age I can't hear much anyway .

I'm way ahead of you TB. I'm hard of hearing in BOTH ears. It's called selective hearing. Yeah - I'm the grand master in that department Ask my wife... ROFL!!!!

While I do understand what you're saying. I would be the first to ask if I have a question about a subject of a build I'm doing. It's not only fun but a learning process when it comes to improving myself.

That is exactly it !

When we ask or take advice freely given  courteously  , we benefit from our knowledge and what also  someone suggested or said , " Well , this is how I do that " .

Frinstance .I recieved a " Goody Box " from a friend in another state . he knows I build floaty thingies and cars . Sometimes a piece of armor . What's in the box ?A 1/48 " Birdcage " Corsair and a F-46 - 47 SeaFire . Now there's also two " U " Boats . And a race car . ( I wanted the car for the body )

What I think , is he wants me to build these birds . Why ? Well I made the mistake of showing him my two favorites that have yet to be decaled. .A 1/48 Helldiver and a ( M.E.262 A with clear fuselage and stuff .

The 262 is completely plumbed under the skin , right down to the electricals and hydraulics !

I don't usually do this to fleugelthingies ! (planes ). I think he is saying ," I like your planes , do more of them ! "  Both aircraft are detailed oob with found stuff from around the house too ! No P.E. except the dive Brakes on the Helldiver.

I tried .010 plastic and just couldn't get it right . Now the cowl flaps are cut from beer can aluminum .Yeah - The Silver Bullet " Plus the cockpit canopy is Vacu - Formed without frames  , those  were made from the same stuff . Aluminium !

What does a model, well built, say to me?

It says that it definitely isn't one of my models.                             knox

Hi Dawg !

No , what I am saying is this .Enjoy others models like you enjoy your own .Now , if that modeler says to you , " I did everything I could " You then agree .If he or she says ," But , why didn't I even place ? " well then there's your opening to help .

No , you don't point out the flaws . Just ask " Where do you think they dinged you ? " Then let them tell you . After that , your closing comment should be ." Do you want to see how I handled that ? "

" This might work for you " Then that way you both learned something .You , how to guide someone and them how to listen to someone who's been there .      T.B.

Other then when I share my completed builds here, I'm pretty much the only person that sees my builds. I've kind of gotten over total accuracy and just build for the fun of it. I just wish that I could build faster, because there is so many kits that I would like to tackle.

some good points, but...

I have seen a very well built & excellently 'rusted-to-heck' wrecked LCVP, except that the LCVP was mostly made of wood not sheet steel.

Excellent technique, but Research 101 mistake I would have allowed on a juniors class (in my club show all juniors get a mention or award) but not in a seniors class.

Well;

This is my point .When the junior modeler comes up and says ," Why are some folks joking about my model ?" then you in your infinite wisdom can steer him or her GENTLY straight ! Same with adults , But watch out for big Bad EGO to rear his head .
