Congratulations! It was a great event. I had five entries and did the best I ever have in a model contest.

Been there and done that.  I'm 74 and I don't think I'm too old for all this.  I've finished a model months before a show and NOTHING.  I've also finished one 2 hours before leaving for a 1-1/2 hr. drive to a show and just brought it "for something to bring" and took a 2nd place.  Ditto on the acrylic paint and dullcote".  I still think that this is all a lot of fun and I still enjoy it.  I dropped out of another hobby because the members took it way too serious.

i'm 63. same thing happens with me. one show towed gun doesn't place, next show takes a second now that i do oil  washes i have gone over older builds and entered them in other contests with nice results.

I guess all my late night shenanigans was worth it. Brought home a gold in Dioramas and a silver in Fire Apparatus. I'll see if I can't post up some pics later for you guys.

Congrats on the wins. What was your diorama? i had the other 2 in fire trucks but, as i was judging autos, have no idea what the comments were.

Congrats Dirkpitt.   You're right, sometimes those late shifts do pay off.  Makes it worth the effort.

Black Sheep, it was R/C sailboats.  ................They didn't realize that you are not on these boats but hundreds of yards away and sometimes you can't tell what the boat on your starboard side is doing.  Some of the guys were in their late 70s and early 80s and couldn't see a 1ft. buoy floating at 100 yards let alone tell if you passed on the right side or not.

I am not surprised that it was not possible to know exactly what position an RC boat was in................but can't help wonder if the hobby now has video cameras mounted on the boats to give a helmsman's point of view similar to that available to "drone" owners.

Black Sheep, it was R/C sailboats.  The club was formed for fun sailing.  We had marker buoys set out for a course to sail around the lake taking in all wind conditions.  Some of the guys started making life miserable for the others.  If someone went inside the buoy instead of outside it, they started quoting all kinds of racing rules for real boats.  They didn't realize that you are not on these boats but hundreds of yards away and sometimes you can't tell what the boat on your starboard side is doing.  Some of the guys were in their late 70s and early 80s and couldn't see a 1ft. buoy floating at 100 yards let alone tell if you passed on the right side or not.  It was only a guide.  I also raced them for years and got tired of all the "Sea Lawyers" making it miserable for everyone.  I still have 2 of the boats hanging from the rafters in the basement.  I've had 1 of them out to a local lake once in the past 20 or so years.

I have finished a couple few models in the wee a.m. hours before a show.

Last time I did...I pulled a 16 hour, "marathon" session, to finish up a 1/32 A-10...in bed at 4a.m., up at 7a.m....2+ hour drive to show....took "Best of Show" with it! With all my contest goals achieved (aside from Nats...we'll see how that goes this year!), I'm just not that into shows anymore, so I don't push the issue of getting one finished in time...if I do, great, if not, no biggy, it'll go whenever I decide to go to another show.

If I had said that in my mid forties I would have missed a quarter century of model contests and some of my nicest awards.  I have learned to save a model for "next year's show," however. I have learned that cramming the night before often does not lead to my best building skills. so I put that model down and leave it for other shows and other years, going with what I already have.

Was this a build done specifically to do that show, or was it one already in progress when you found out about the show?

Sounds like a job rather then a relaxing hobby.
