I had reason to call Free Time today about an unrelated issue and as luck would have it got the owner on the phone. The conversation quickly turned to their pre-order policy and he completely heard me out and then offered his side of the issue. I didn't think I'd won the argument but a half an hour later received an email from him saying that they were changing their policy and wouldn't process the credit card charge until they were in the process of receiving the out of stock item. I just checked their site and the revised policy is there in writing. How refreshing to find a business that listens and is open to change. I'm totally sold. Thanks Brandon.

This thread made me curious, with the popular trend in HO locos being pre-order, anyone know if those are paid for at time of order?

If so, I wonder if this had something to do with FreeTime's new deal?

Most retailers wont charge til they ship but how I see it is that either you pay later or now. It doesn't bother me as I have used FTH on multiple occasions and have never had an issue. The great thing about using a credit card is that you can dispute your purchase or lack of, and be able to get your money back if things don't materialize.

Your right, most places won't charge you until they ship.I don't think that's fair what they are doing. They have always been reliable and good with their service, but new policy isn't right, taking our money and then waitng who know how long.

Pre-orders
Posted by jeffpez on Friday, August 14, 2015 4:02 PM

I recently pre-ordered something from Free Time Hobbies and was surprised to see my credit card was debited for the purchase a day later even though the item isn't in stock yet. I've never ordered anything from anyone before that was out of stock where the card was charged before the item was shipped so I sent their customer service folks an email. That was two days ago and so far I have no response. A quick search of their site found a "new" policy stating that they immediatly charge on pre-orders to assure no delay in shipping when the item becomes available. I found that beyond silly but I've never had an issue with Free Time and won't cancel the order. My question is has anyone had any experience with pre-orders and does anyone have an opinion on their policy of getting paid for something they don't even own.
