Who built them?
Posted by Texgunner on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 3:42 PM

Does anyone know who the modelers were who built the models on Monogram box tops?  I'm referring to kits from the 80s and 90s right up to today.  It seems like I can recall credits for the builder on some kits but that might have been other manufacturers, ie. Testors.  Of course, as a kid building model cars mostly in the mid to late 60s, I marveled at the completed car models shown on boxes and wondered how the builder could make them look so good.  That was the "level" I aspired to! Big Smile

Good question... I only remember the Testors boxtop kits having any credit as to builders.

Hans Von Hammer?

Seriously, a good question. I do know when I was a kid I wanted to be that guy.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Why not contact Revell since they took over Monogram and ask the magic pregunta?

IIRC, a few models were built by Chicago area IPMS members.

I do not recall any names or which models.

You might start by contacting some of these IPMS chapters

and see if anyone recalls who built models for Monogram back then. Hmm

Hello;

 I do know that I did some box top test shots for a company that wanted to do something different .

     They wanted to do different cars than the run of the mill " SS " Camaros , Firebirds and Mustangs " GT " Models . They had me do the Firebird as a  "Formula Firebird " with the offset hood scoop and special trim package .Then the Camaro was to be the absolute stripped down " 500 " six cylinder version .

   The Mustang the same . Dog dishes all around all three ! The hardest part was making them Photogenic . Hi Gloss paint and my first use of foil chrome !

    They paid well , But I never saw them produced .Hmmmm . Shame too . I wanted to see how the modelers took to Plain jane interiors . Remember Most came without a Radio or Air Conditioner standard at that time. It was certainly a challenge to down grade these cars .

 The Firebird was the hardest , in a Gold and Light Brown ( leather ) color. No Radio , Air or " T " tops .

    Many box - cover models ARE built in house by modelers , that do nothing but display and cover art models . They are usually , as with Revell a group of ladies .

    Each one has a specialty and that's all she does . They probably have some men doing them too , Now .

Texgunner ;

    When I first got out of the service I was looking for work .Was offered a job on the line or the warehouse but not building models .This was at REVELL inc.when they were in Venice Cal.

   I later found out that they employed women as model builders because they were steadier of hand , Quicker on the job and Neater with details . Each one had one job and that was that .

 At that time Men were Never considered for that job . You could work any-where else but that shop . That's alright though , I got a better paying job at Avecor Plastics , Making quite a few dollars more for my knowledge of colors and plastics .
