ROG vs Academy 1/72 B-17G?
Posted by plasticjunkie on Thursday, December 3, 2015 7:19 AM

Which of the two is a better kit? I read that Academy's kit has recessed panel lines and a very decent pit but poor details in the nacelles and gear area.

Gee whiz!!! It's not even a comparison! The Academy kit is good, if a car it'd be a Chevy or Ford. The Revell of Germany kit is beautiful, it's a Cadillac of kits. And the two kits are basically the same price, so why buy the Chevy when the Caddy is the same price???

Pretty much Tamiya quality for a fraction of the price with the RoG. Complete interior, I've been building one and the interior detail is fantastic. I thought about posting some photos when I'm done, I'll see if I can hunt them up. Only real complaint is there's so much interior detail it took me forever to get it all painted so I could assemble the kit.

That is why I was asking to find out which is better which I suspected to be the ROG one which you just confirmed so thanks for the heads up and please do post some pictures. I did the old 1/48 G as Little Miss Mischief many years ago when it was first released and eventually sold it on ebay for some good cash. I would like to do the same markings but in 1/72 which is a more manageable size even in the smaller scale.

Ernie - The ROG is the hands down choice, perfect fits, clear parts and overall quality. My only personal issue is the panel line dimensions, just a tad more than ideal, but as a kit? 9.5 out of 10.

ROG rocks.

Just finished the ROG "F" kit. Lots of spare parts that I didn't use since I couldn't see it later. Lots of optional parts that allowed me to build a particular bird. Highly recommended.

Guys, the ROG is a re issue of the Pro-Modeler correct?

I could be wrong, but I think the Pro-Modeler kit was 1/48.   The new-tool RoG B-17 is 1/72.

My kit came in this ProModeler box:

Here's a few photos I had on PhotoBucket, I'll have to pull the others off my phone. I'll try to get them either tonight or this weekend.

BTW: I found out later that the bomb bay probably was natural metal, well too late now... Embarrassed

gamera

Thanks for the post and pictures. I finally found a review that says ROG and Pro Modeler are the same kit except ROG is silver and Pro Modeler is grey. The decals are better in the Pro Modeler.

Thanks gents for your input!
