Spanish Civil War Group Build?
Posted by Cat Daddy on Thursday, December 3, 2015 12:11 PM

I'm reading this:

and I realized this morning that July 18, 2016 is the 80 anniversary of the day the Nationalist rebellion that started the war.

Any interest out there in a group build starting 7/18/16? There's a wealth of kits out there that cover the subjects although decals for the civil war may be a bit more of a challenge.

I certainly would be interested. A little hard as there's not much in the way of Naval, AFAIK. Good to plan far enough out.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

This is a nice, fresh idea, and I certainly would be interested in participating in it.

I really liked that book myself,a good followup that I could recommend is The Spanish Holocaust by Paul Preston. The brutality on each side was unbelievable.

As for the build,my stash is bare of anything that will fit in and I really don't need to buy more. But we will see.

I will check out that book. I'm constantly amazed (appalled?) at the brutality shown by both sides in this war. It strikes me as one in which there really was no side you could consider "the good guys" - it was two failed ideologies duking it out as a prelude to WWII.

I kind of burned out on group builds, but this is a great idea for one.

It just happens that I am reading the same book right now.

The challenge will be that this was a very political war. Having lived in Barcelona for a while, my observation is that Spain is one of many countries that should really be about three.

That being said, and I am whole heartedly Republican sympathetic in this one, very very interesting if folks contribute all of the history they can muster behind the story of their builds.

My sentiments would be wholeheartedly Republican but for the fact that at the point I am in the "story" - the fall of Bilbao in late 1937, the Republican cause appears to be a means for the Russians to introduce Soviet-style communism into Spain. My speculation is that had the Republicans won, Spain would have become a communist country run from afar by Stalin.

But, yeah, the Basques got screwed.
