Organizing Tools, Supplies, etc.?
Posted by bluewavecaptain on Sunday, December 13, 2015 11:00 AM

I thought I had my modeling area pretty organized. But it turns out that I keep ending up with more tools, supplies, parts, etc. So what do you all do to organize your modeling area and store stuff? I was thinking of buying some of those craft boxes at Hobby Lobby or something? I guess ultimately I should stop buying more modeling stuff, but it's like an addiction.... Thanks in advance.

Small metal tool boxes with sliding drawers, maybe with top and bottom box aka "Husky" brand. Also fishing "tackle" boxes would work great. The plastic craft boxes that have all the pull out drawers and are on wheels. I think have the fun is making the model shop and bench work space.

I have a pegboard panel at the rear of my bench that I put all my frequently used tools on.  Then I put the other tools in drawers on the right side of the bench.  Supplies except for masking tape go in drawers on left. I affixed a small piece of pegboard to the left side of the bench, and put masking tapes on hooks on that panel.

I do just keep glue on the benchtop.

I have a nice metal cabinet from Ikea for most of my things. I also have two 3-drawer plastic cabinets for more tools and gadgets. Everything I need is kept organized.

I keep all my hobby tools in a Kennedy machinist toolbox, you find them cheap on craiglist or similar.

Hi;

I have drawers with non skid inside . Then I have a small short wall to hang all my pliers and cutters on and P. E . Tools on . The non - skid lined drawers are used for other tools to big for the wall and some of the heavier tools .

Remember , I work in many types of material so my tools vary . I also have two benches in the garage and one in my part of the house inside ( for winter work ).

Each is used regularly .     T.B.

I've found none of the prebuilt organizers very useful.

I've spents lots of money on organizers over the years and finally built my own geared toward my preferences. Taking ideas from here, there, and my own ideas. Despite this I still see room for improvement.

I generally store the larger tools like drills, glue guns, saws, soldering irons, grinders, etc in drawers.

On my work bench within easy reach are brushes, files, glues, tweezers, sanding sticks/paper, applicators, etc.

Last Christmas my wife bought me an 18" long stainless steel magnetic Knife Holder that hangs on the wall. The type the Chefs use in restaurant kitchens to hold their fancy set of knives. Totally her idea! She said it was about $30. Big Smile

Man, what a great way to keep all your STEEL hand tools handy right in front of your workbench on the wall. On it, I keep handy:

Pin Vise

Xuron sprue cutters

Xuron tweezer-nosed pliers

Jeweler's files

Rifflers

Carving tools

Scribers

Scissors

Wire cutters

Airbrush and Dremel wrnches

ETC...

VERY handy!

I know what you mean. I am drawing plans up to make an organizer that is modeled after this: http://www.hobbyzone.pl/en/wsm/

I am thinking about using acrylic sheets. I can get 24" X 24" sheets that are 1/16" thick or 1/8" thick. It can be assembled with acrylic cement used on acrylic aquariums. Then I can paint them whatever color I want.
