Academy CH 53 E, assembly and painting help
Posted by Gbtr6 on Thursday, December 17, 2015 11:43 AM

Hi everyone,

I am asking for help on my build of the Academy CH 53E. It's a great kit, and goes together well so far. I have the Eduard etch, and some mask sets. I have made some progress. My son in law flew one of these in the middle east, and he is flying again for a New Jersey reserve squadron. I have made decals of his markings, and am to a point were I want to assemble and paint.

First, I do mostly cars, so I know assembly sequence is different. I have done some planes and I assume that is like this helo. Just that this thing has so many appendiges. Any one out there that is or has built this kit, please let me know how to do the assembly and paint sequence, and pictures of that if possible.

Thanks,
Perry

I'm buld that model right now . This is a big build modelkit .

You can check out my build in the Helicopter thread .

I been on it for about 9 months . I may not finish it  for good bit. I do stop on big builds like this to build out the box models .

If you have ? you can post them in my thread or start one in the Helicopter forum .

Enjoy

Rick

I was actually going to post a link to that excellent build thread (beautiful stuff there!!!), but got sidetracked by something shiney!

But, to the question at hand...paint up the interior first (obviously), them build up your exterior, as much as possible...with the exception of small pieces that can easily be knocked away (antennas, probes, etc)...I glue (with just a tiny dab of CA) the small bits on a piece of scrap sprue, and paint them seperately, at the same time as I paint the model...those all get glued on after painting, gloss, decals, wash, weathering...then the final flat clear coat after all is in place.

I would suggest asking this in the Aircraft forum.
