I use a brush for everything as I don't have an airbrush. The only time I wish I have one is for soft edge cammo or some effects.

I often pre-spray everything while the parts are still on the sprues. Wheels, landing gear, tires, interior / cockpit colors, etc. Then, after trimming the parts from the sprues, I trim / sand off any flash left behind on the edges--which can easily be hand-painted to touch them up.

I know guys who mask and airbrush EVERY little black box inside the cockpit...too tedious for my taste. I hand brush the small details.

And yes, I ALWAYS airbrush the outside--occaasionally I will lay down the base color with Tamiya or Testors rattle cans.

For instance: after airbrushing interior green on US WWII aircraft; I will dry-brush a much lighter shade of the same color on all the raised structural details to bring out highlights. It makes the details stand out so much taller once a detail pin wash is applied.

You seem to refer specifically to building and finishing an aircraft model, and my answer is that for me, it depends on the subject, whether I use the airbrush--or rattle-cans--to apply paint or brush by hand.  For example, for an aircraft, I'll apply paint to the large areas--fuselage exterior and interiors, for the most part--by spraying, and paint small pieces and details by hand.  For figures, I'll apply paint almost entirely by hand, though I have started experimenting with spraying, for larger figures (1/6 or 1/8 scale).  For a car, I spray almost entirely, for the even application.

But for some sci-fi subjects--Maschinen Krieger--I am experiementing with apply paints to areas, like the exterior of an armored fighting suit, by hand.  I thin the paints just as for spraying, and apply layers to build them up.  Among the MaK builders I know, it seems to be relatively popular to paint them by hand, especially using lacquers from Japan.

So, it depends on the modeler, and the subject--everyone will have a preference, and for some jobs, one or the other may work better, that is, may be less fuss and produce a better finish.

On occasion when I've got a detail color going, like silver for landing gear, or chromate gree, I'll get a bunch of kits out of the stash and shoot the parts on the trees. If anything, they'll be primed for the future.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I find that as I get used to the airbrush I'm using it more for everything except very small items that are added near the end of the build.

Hello,

I was wondering how many of you only use your airbrush for the body, frame and tub. And hand paint the rest of it. I have been pulling out my airbrush for small parts. At the moment I don't have a dedicated bench for modeling. My farther n law passed so he have a bunch of his furniture in the garage yep right up against  my bench. So I am thinking on my next build I am going to hand paint the everything except the big stuff.
