Build review 2015
Posted by Bish on Monday, December 28, 2015 2:31 PM

I was hoping to get my Osprey done before the end of the week and then do this thread. But, having messed up a couple of the decals i am now awaiting some spares so i guess i will have to add the Osprey to my 2016 completed pile.

Its been a really busy modelling year for me. I have finished 14 (almost 15) as well as finishing a dio for an older armour build. I have had sevearl firsts and finally done a build i have been wanting to do for 2 decades.

The forum has had an interesting year which has not gone without some hickups. But its good to see most of us here and some new faces many of whom have setteled right in.

So, this is what i have done this year. I started of with a couple of modern US jets, not my usual fair.

2015 was kicked off with a Hasegawa 1/72nd F-16D.

Swiftly followed by one of my favorite modern types, Italeri's 72nd F-111A.

Before this year i had not built a resin kit. I broke that cherry with not one but three.

From HPH, a 1/18th DB 605 engine as fitted to a Bf 109G-6.

A must for every Star Wars fan has to be a TIE Bomber. This is a 1/72nd resin kit from Multi Verse Models.

And my first bust, a 1/10th Sioux from Youngs Minitures.

My first armour build of the year was a Dragon 35th Jagdpanther. AS i build dio's, making my own tress was somthing i had to do at some point. I wanted my Jagd well hidden in a wood, so i ended up making 3 trees.

For me, the German assault on Eben Emael and the bridges over the Alber Canal is often over loked if not completly unknown. I believe it was one of the finest examples of a small unit action in WW2, as well as being the first time gliders had been used in combat. This mode of transport was short lived, but played a vital role in WW2's latter stages. So, in tribute to the men of Assault Group Granite in particular, i built Huma's 1/72nd DFS 230 to portray the opening moments of the assualt, focusing on Squad 8.

Next, the old Airfix P-61B.

1/35th is my usual scale of choice for armour. But my partner got this for a birthday a couple of years back because i used to drive Warriors. This is Revells 72nd warrior 510.

I built Tamiyas 35th Marder III Ausf M back in 2014, but i wasn't able to do the diorama. Some how i managed to squeeze that in this year.

And another first was my first 1/32nd aircrfat. This is the Hasegawa Bf 109F-4/Trop as flown by Hans Joachim Marseille in early Sept 1942.

An aircrfat i have wanted to add to the build pile for some time is the He 219. This is Dragons 72nd 219A-0 kit.

I built this for the WW1 GB but soon realised my heart was not in it. I almost throw it away sevearl times but decided just to finish it as best i could. I wasn't going to strain my nerves by doing the rigging so jst left that out. Not my proudest bild of the year for sure. This is the Eduard 1/72nd Albatros D.V.

Ever since my return to the hobby from my brief adsance, i mainly stick to German armour in 35th. But i decided to would like to build some of the British armour i worked with. So this is the first of those, Tamiya's Challenger II during Op Granby.

And, what turned out to be my final completed build of the year, Screamins 1/4 Stormtrooper. I thought the biggest challenge would be getting hold of a kit. After several years i managed to find one on the other side of the pond early this year. And i finished it just in time for the release of Starars Ep VII.

And thats your lot. Its been a fun year when all is said and done. I am really looking forward to the year ahead, i have a number of builds already planned out and really looking forward to those. And hoping the forum will have a great year.

Such a great variety of subjects!  I was particularly struck by the bust of the Sioux warrior.

I don't know why I thought you didn't do aircraft WIPs, because I've seen all of those builds before.  Maybe it was because I associate you more with Group Builds than the other.

Well done, sir!  You are one of the stalwarts on this forum.  It wouldn't be the same without you.

Thanks for the look and comments guys.

Bruce, my jaw dropped when i unwrapped that Sioux bust. Its not what i had in mind for my first bust, but i really enjoyed it and it was not as daunting as i had expected.

Gary, ye, i do tend to do a lot of GB's Whistling, but i do seperate WiP threads for most of them as well. I am planning on doing a few more none GB builds this year to, the Sioux and the Warrior were my first ones that were not part of a GB.

Bish,

Wow!!...Bravo Sir. Each piece is immensely well done and the detail is spot on. I am impressed with your tree work also. I would love to see more of your diorama work in the future. Again, great job Sir!

Thanks a lot guys.

Jeff, i tend to include some of the diorama work in my threads, it all depends how much is going into the dio. And i certainly see more trees coming in the future.

Thanks Mike. I don't expect to build as many, several of those were rather quick builds. And I want to take more time with my builds and especially improve on the diorama's.

That's some impressive work Bish, and quite prolific as well.  My hat's off to you!  While they all look good, my faves are the DB engine, the warrior bust and the tank dio.  Well done sir!Bow Down

Just wondering if there 's anything you can't do. The bust knocked me out in particular, but I clipped a few for my wall to remind myself that this is how it should be done. Outstanding work, and the output... do you have modeling elves in a workshop?

Thanks for posting these Bish, I'd seen some of them but not all. I have to echo everyone else here, very impressive work both in quality and variety.

LOL, this is not a normal year for me believe me. Several of those were rather quick builds. I am fortunate in that i get to spend several hours at the bench each night. I don't watch much TV and my other half works 3 nights a week so my time is my own.

I must admit, the bust surprised me as well. Until last year i use to really struggle with 35th figures, especially the faces. But the guys on here really helped out and doing this larger face has also helped me with my smaller ones. Now i have to learn how to do armour, as in the sort hyou wear, for a Roman bust she got me.

Of course, i am sure my other half thinks there are other things i could be doing, but thats just boring.

Thanks very much for all the comments guys. Its great being able to share all this with all the great folk on here, and my builds are as much down to all the help, advice and inspiration i have got on here as it is down to me.

Well done my friend! I like all of them but I have to say, your bust is awesome. I can hardly wait for the Roman.

My boys all voted of the Star Wars models and I agree they were very well done. I think I might have to add a resin kit to my stash one of these days. Although at the prices for resin ship models, I might have to take a second mortgage out on the house.

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to you and yours.

Thnaks very much for the coments Steve. I plan to get to the Roman in the new yera, just need to do some reading up. And glad your boys liked those.

Resin models are certainly not cheap thats for sure, and you do have to be careful, i messed up the engine at one stage and had to get some replacement parts. But sometime, if you wnat a subject, you don't have much choice.

And the same to you and yours, and happy modelling in 2016.
