Researching Old Jet Aircraft
Posted by Shamen on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 7:34 PM

Hello,

I have just started a project to research and build models of US jet aircraft from the beginning to modern day. The first model is the Bell P-59a Airacomet. While I have begun research through various online sources and have found many photos and diagrams, what I am particularly looking for is scale drawings of the airframe structure (spars, ribs, bulkheads) as well is pictures/drawings of mechanical instruments.

I have submitted a request through the Smithsonian and they have forwarded the request to the National Air and Space Museum Archives Division.

Would other modelers out there know of other research resources I can contact?

This is for the first subject in my project, but I willl be looking at the next subjects as well to prepare.

Thanks,

Shawn

There are a couple books specifically on the P-59.  You might also consider contacting Bell directly or possibly the U.S.A.F. Museum at Wright Patterson A.F.B.

A couple of model airplane magazines in the forties and fifties always had scale three-views in the mags, and really covered the rise of jets.  There were only a couple of good draftsmen that made the drawings, and collections of those 3-views were bound and sold as books.

The main two were Paul Matt and W.  Wylam.  Search for old books credited to these guys.

Thanks,

I have ordered a book - Air Force Legends Number 208, P-59 Airacomet. I have looked for an address for Bell, but since it was long acquired by Textron Corporation it is hard to find a contact at Textron that knows if they still have documents on the P-59. I'll keep plugging away and thanks for your help.
