1/48 Avro Vulcan
Posted by RudyOnWheels on Monday, May 2, 2016 10:00 AM

I know somone was SUPPOSED to release a 1/48 Avro Vulcan, did it ever happen>? I got my hands on a 2012 Issue of "FLYPAST", an apparently British magazine that had one that flew until 2015 and now only does high-speed taxi runs, but WOW, how I somehow missed this plane in tha past is beyond me.  I'd love to find and build one in 1:48.... I know they make this exact plane in 1:72, airfix I believe.

Thanks!

I have not heard of a 48th one, now that would be a beast. It is a shame the real thing has now been grounded, hopefully in the future they will be able to get it airbourne again.

I have been lucky to see it flying several times. Watching that go over head with the bomb doors open is an impresive sight. Last year it did a tour of the country and it came over RAF Lakenheath where i was working at the ime and every one was out to see it. Consdiering the base has all sorts of types flying in and over ehad, including C-5's and B-52's, it was great to see everyone, Brits and Americans, come out to see the last true British bomber make its pass.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Nope. The Vulcan is grounded for good. 2015 was the final year she was to be flying in air shows. Too much to maintain to keep it flying. She's now officially a hangar queen.

The Airfix kit dates from the early-mid 80's & was reboxed by MPC at the time. I believe it's a rather tough kit to build cleanly & takes a bit of work.

There's also a 1/200 scale kit by Dragon and a much older & cruder Lindberg kit (1/96 perhaps?) which represents the prototype or an early B.1 model with a shorter wingspan & straight leading edges.

Great Wall Hobby did 1/144 tanker and bomber Vulcan kits In the last few years. I'm not sure anyone would seriously consider doing a 1/48 kit; the 1/72 one is pretty massive already.

I don't know in 48th scale it would have a wingspan of 25" and a length just over 24" but man that wing would be a lot of plastic

Ruby, i wounder if this is the one you heard about. Its a vac form kit and on Hannants due for future release, which does not mean much. Sfraid there is no image.

And this is their website. Vulcan is about half way down. Again no release date, just says will be released after their 48th B-52.

I believe the 1/48 Vulcan kit was by Aeroclub.  It was a vac kit with multi-media detail bits.  I am unsure if the announced Sanger kit will reuse the Aeroclub patterns.  Airfix needs to do this one (plus in 1/72), as we could all use a novelty coffee table!

When I was a wee lad, my father took me to Hickan AFB on open house day, and there was a Vulcan on two occasions.  They were parked apart from all the other aircraft and roped off.  No one seemed interested in the aircraft, so it must have looked odd to see a lone little kid running around, gawking and geeking out.  Too bad we didn't have digital cameras back in the day.  My Kodak Instamatic only had about a dozen shots!  I did get a shot of one of the aircraft's tail, which had the serial nubmer and squadron badges, so I'd like to model that particular bird one day.

tempestjohnny - not to mention the gallons of paint and glue you'll need to complete the build. LOL!

Not to mention the size of the aircraft carrier you would have to display it on Big Smile

There is a Vulcan B.2 at Castle AFB in Atwater, California. Atwater is in the backyard of nowhere.

Best Vulcan movie: "Thunderball".

Only Vulcan movie: "Thunderball".

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

It's pretty much a dog.  The airsplitters in the wing root intakes have a big freakin horizontal seam right across the middle, and the vanes themselves taper to that. FOD covers are the norm for that model.

No jet nozzles, just big holes in the back of the wing.

Interior though with five little Airfix aliens.
