A lot of specific questions here!
Posted by Don Stauffer on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 8:31 AM

There sure seem to be a lot of very specific model building questions here.  Do we need to make the font size larger in the statement of purpose for the General Modeling Discussion forum?

Well, at least it seems less modeling related questions are being posted in Forum Technical Assistance lately though.

I think it's mostly newer members that are still learning the site navigation.

But it's till a general modeling thread covering anything.

I have noticed that sometimes I post let's say a paint related question in the painting section but get no hits after a day or so. I then post the same question in the general modeling section and get several answers within an hour or two.

I wish we could get more participation in the Tools, Techniques, and Reference Materials section.  IMHO the discussions there are more likely to be better answers.

I must admit an old bias.  Remember newsgroups?  The one most related to the FSM forums was called rec.models.scale.  One forum for all scale modeling.  Every so often there was a call to split the group so there would be seperate forums for each genre.  I was always opposed to this.  However, now having been active in the FSM forums for years, I see the advantage of a number of seperate forums, and would not want to go back to a single forum for all scale modeling.  I admit it-- I was wrong back then!

This kind of posting behavior isn't unique to FSM; I see this in other forums I belong to.  Most of those forums, however, take more steps that FSM does to highlight things like FAQ pages, and forum etiquette/behavior pages.  By "behavior", I don't mean just, "don't cuss or call people names", but, "post things in the relevant forums".  Most of them put things like that at the top of their page, so they're as visible as possible.  Here in FSM, the equivalent forum is almost the last thing in the list of forums.

But in the end, you can't prevent someone from posting something in a less-than-appropriate forum.  As one of the posters mentioned, the general discussion thread gets more hits, so, people post questions there.  And otherwise, many people just don't bother to read down the list of forums, or to get to deeply into them.

I've PM'd a moderator occasionally in the past to move a thread to a more appropriate forum, but generally, I'm with the one who said he just doesn't worry about it that much.

Here's why you can't worry about this.  Just today, there is a post in the General thread, asking about how difficult a particular airplane kit is to build.

But if we're going to talk about pet forum peeves, another of mine is people who don't read threads, and then post a question, whose answer was just a couple of posts before theirs.

But like I said, you have to let it go.  As Hyman Roth said, "Dis is da business we chose for ourselves."

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

Or, don't read their own threads and answer a question.

I may be guilty of that if the thread goes on too long.  If the message count goes on past the fifties or sixties, I must admit I loose interest.  I saw recently a thread that I had started a year ago and now is into ninety messages had a new response.  I consider a year old thread a zombie thread and didn't even look at the post- though with that many messages I might not have even if it was fairly new.

A few years back I was guilty of this. I had posted a specific question about a TBM-3 Avenger. I was new to FSMs forum and new to forums in general. I didn't quite understand the process. All that I knew was that I needed help, and General Discussion seemed like a good place to start. I guess what I am saying is that sometimes...it happens.

Still, maybe Don's idea will help with those that should know better and maybe even help direct a few that don't. Maybe even put the font in red. Nothing says pay attention like red.

I try as hard as I can to answer any question that I feel truly deems that it should be. However, I don't post in the wrong forum as I feel that this is disrespectful. I too am guilty of "necro-posting" as it's called by a few, but I don't always do this purposely. I replied to several of these yesterday wishing that I had read them at the time that they were new. I have valuable information that others can still use even if the thread is old. It never goes out of style even if techniques, and tool usage changes from time to time. I see that we have new members as of late, and after reading through this forum that there are "dead threads" than live ones! That's sad since this is my favourite site to visit, and contribute to now. It used to be hobby talk, but there're too many egos to caress, or offend and too many different points of view from members who think that they either own the damned site, or don't care what others have to say if it's something different from what they believe, or what their personal experience may be! That's what had destroyed that site, and a few others as well.
