Photobucket problems
Posted by Don Stauffer on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 9:12 AM

I am having a problem with Photobucket recently.  Every time I use the site I get a bunch of pop-up ads.  They are virtually continuous, I can't close them, and they make the site almost useless (can't upload photos).  This is the only site I have this problem with.  Anyone else having this problem.  I have pop-ups disabled in my browser (Mozilla) but still get them at PB.

I usually get one big one with lots of thumbnails and a "return to site" button, and then back to normal.

I'm not having the pop-up problem, but I can't  upload any photos since I upgraded my Mac OS to "El Capitan".  PB is worth exactly what you pay for it- nothing.

Don are you using the free version of PB?  I have the premium PB and don't see the pop ups.

Tex, may I ask what you are paying for the Premium version? You can PM if you like.

I use the free version of PB, and I do get several pop-up, but, not to the level that makes the site unusable.

Don, I am experiencing the exact same issue and the problem seems to be getting worse over time. It is close to the point of being useless because the site is locking up every time that I log into it. It is very irritating, and it was just a few days ago that it crossed my mind to find another photo site to work though.

Bruce, I pay about $30 per year for the +Plus 20 plan.  That's the cheapest-level upgrade they offer, iirc.

I get the same thing.  When the full page pops up with its 8 pictures, the only way I can get rid of it most times is to hit the big red x and start over.  Sometimes the site just stops working at all.  I've had at least one time in the past where my pictures were replicated without my having to do anything.

Tex, so the premium has no pop ups, how is the upload time, any different since is seems to take a while to do one picture.  I'm a little hesitant to upgrade because I have been burned a few times through these types of deals.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott, the upload time really depends on your internet connection I guess.  At home, our internet is pretty slow (ATT no-fiber optic yet), but over the weekend, we were at our daughter's home in the Colony, northwest of Dallas.  Wow, I uploaded seven pics at their house in about 10 seconds, fiber optic speed!

I paid for the upgrade to get more storage space.  Really, although I do hear a lot of kevetching about Photobucket, I've never had any real issues with it.  It always seems to do what I want it to do.  I just wish the upload speed was as fast here as at Ann's home. Big Smile

Yeah, I do have use the free version.  Since there are other free image hosting sites, I will explore those before I start paying for hosting.

I understand why FSM/Kalmbach does not host our photos.  The storage needed for that is very large.  With PB and other photo hosting sites, it is a business, and they earn money from it, from prints and other things like mugs and that.  With FSM would be pure cost with no return- I understand that and am okay with it. If I have to find a new hosting site, so be it.

I second what Don said.

I get that PB has to make some money by allowing some pop-ups, but when it affects the functionality of the site, then it is a problem. When these things come up, I can't even close them. Trying to do so often opens another window to their product. Sometimes I can close it from there, sometimes I can't. With another pop-up it completely locks the page. If I manage to close it, it closes PB. I log back in and the same thing happens. I have to keep trying until I can get my way. To me, it's as if the PB site has been hijacked.

Anyway...if this keeps up I will have to search out other free photo hosting sites. I am not paying for something like this if I don't have to.

I don't mind sharing, either.  I bit the bullet last year, when I finally used up the free space (2 gig), and took the minimum package (Plus 50) at $49 a year, 50 gig of storage.  FB's maximum plan offers 500 gig, at $399 a year.  There are several plans in between.

I thought about switching to another hosting site, and running out any free space, but in the end, I decided it was worth it to avoid managing accounts across multiple hosts, and to pay for that convenience.  Four bucks and change per month wasn't too bad.

Thanks Gary for the insight.  I know its not my connection speed.  Its the Java Script crashing when I try to do an upload and a file transfer at the same time a pop up is trying to engage.  Sometimes I swear it takes me longer to upload a build log than it takes to do the actual build.  Its all within PB.

I really do not need more space, but if $50 pays for better performance and reliablity do to no advertisments, I may do it.

Maybe PB has dropped the Plus 20 plan as I don't see it offered as a choice now.  As it is now, I've used almost 20% of my storage.  Other hosting sites may offer a better value but I've never looked into any others since starting my Photobucket account many years ago.  Smile

I just looked and the Plus 20 plan is still offered for $29.99 per year or $2.99 per month. It may not be a choice for you Gary, since you already have that plan.

Yes, I had considered that possibility too.  Good, I'm glad that it's still offered.  Thirty dollars for a year isn't that bad, especially if the service is good!Wink

My solution to this nonsense is:  I'm not posting any more photos.

Maybe the problem is now fixed.  The last couple of days when going to PB, I did not have the problem.  Maybe they found a way to fix it.  The popups I was seeing were not advertising PB, so maybe they were hacked or something.

I had similar issues with PB about 3 years ago and switched to Image Shack and man it's great.

I would advise you to have your computer checked at a shop for adware. The tech told me I had over 500 adware files with PB being the suspect so I dropped PB like a hot potato.

I had my PC swept last December and they found only one adware file so I'm pretty confident PB will load up your system with junk.

EDIT: Just went back to my emails and I pay $18.99  a year for the premium service, well worth every penny!
