B-24H Liberator, B-24J Liberator
Posted by BlackSheepTwoOneFour on Thursday, July 7, 2016 2:25 PM

Ok, I've got a bit of a dilemma. What is the difference in appearance between the H model and the J model B-24 Liberator?  Can a B-24J Liberator kit pass off as a B-24H Liberator? They look basically the same except maybe the nose / tail turrents are different(?).

Are there any AM nose turrent to convert a B-24J into a B-24H Liberator in 1/72 scale? I'd like to build a B-24 Liberator of the Zodiac squadron.

It really depends on the sub-variant of the J what the differences are, but they can include different nose / tail / top turrets, differnt engines, different waist windows, different nose gear doors, numerous fuselage window differences, wing and tail de-icer boot differences, fuel systems, superchargers (just to name a few).  Why not just buy a B-24H kit?

Finding a B-24D or B-24J is easy to find. But  B-24H? Not so much...

I turned a J back to an H a couple of years back. Ashide from the turrets and the small transparency's in the side of the nose, which the Hase kit provides the options for, the only thing i changed was the lower transparency in the nose. If i remeber right, i just sanded and polihsed away part of the canopy frame.

Not sure what scale your doing, bt i couldn't find an H in 72nd. In fact i have 2 more J's which will both nee converting.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Again... it's hard to find. I've looked everywhere with zero success.

From what I can determine, there were two engines considered when the B-24 was designed, the single row Wright R-1820 and the twin row Pratt & Whitney R-1830.  Since the 1820 was already in use on the B-17, the B-24 was designed to use the R-1830. And all operational versions continued to use that engine until the mid 50's. (Most of the latter were the Navy's PB4Y-1 and -2.  The 4Y-2 models had the biggest diffirence in the engines.  They still used the R-1830 engines but without the external mounted turbochargers.

The type of engine in the B-24H is irrelevant in 1/72 scale.

Heh... evilBay.. I mean eBay. I refuse to get in a bidding war on eBay. To many bid snipers on there. I prefer not to waste my time bidding on an item when I know there are bidding hacks involved.

Sheep

Too many models on ebay to get into a bidding war and lots with "buy it now" option. I recently picked up a Revell Pro Modeler 1/72 B-17G and an Academy 1/72 Liberator "The Dragon and his Tail" for about $24 each, factory sealed boxes. Can't beat that.

The Liberator has the correct colors on the dragon which apparently others have gotten wrong. That scheme has to be the fanciest art work I have ever seen on a plane. It starts on the nose and ends all the way back in the tail.
