IPMS Nationals, A First Time Experience
Posted by Jester75 on Sunday, August 7, 2016 4:42 PM

Finally, after many years I managed to make it to a Nationals event this year for the first time. Overall, it was a great experience! Columbia was a really good venue and the area around the convention center was very interesting.  Had some history as well as some great eats! As for the event itself, I was definitely impressed. The vendor selection was ridiculous (although they didn't bring many ships Angry) and it was pretty cool to see the folks from Eduard and Zoikei-Mura in person. The new Zoukei-Mura Phantom is looks pretty dang nice and I for one am looking forward to its release.

Participation I thought was pretty good and the competition in some categories was pretty stiff. There were a lot of really good ships, the armor categoring was just busting at the seams, and quarter scale aircraft were aplently! One of the highlights of the show was getting to hang out with a couple of longtime FSM regulars The Revenant....

and the doog!

As for myself I only took three kits, 1 38t and 2 Fw190's. I try to go into these things with some pretty low expectations so I was pretty stoked to find that my little 38t had actually placed 2nd in armor! Woohoo!

It was also pretty sweet to learn that a local club in Chattanooga will be hosting the Nationals in 2019! These guys put on an awesome yearly show so I have no doubt they will rock the Nats!

For anyone interested, the link below will take you to my ImageShack album where you can browse the few pics I did manage to take. If I had to guess, I probably only photographed 1/5th of the subjects that were actually there.

PHANTOM??? Tell me more please!.....Aww darn, just checked it out on the web and it's in 1/48th. Was hoping for another 1/32 Phantom, maybe something like the F-4B or an RF-4.

Being that I am in Tucson, I'm planning on attending the Phoenix show. Ought to be able to rustle up something to take there. And lately it seems that 2 years is my model kit build rate/speed.

Yes sir! They are producing a -J model right now and had the injection molded sample at the show. They said they have several variants in the plans as well including teh C/D, B, N, and S. Do Google search for it or if you are on social media follow them. There are some great shots of the test sample out there.

Congratulations, Eric!  Glad to hear you had a good time and that you came home with a little bling as well.  Way to represent the FSM forum!

Sure glad you had fun at your first nats and congrats on your win, Eric.

I'm jealous you hooked up with a couple forum buddies. I really wanted to in Ohio last summer, never found anyone.

Did the flooding affect anything with the show?

Oh, and Chattanooga in a couple years? Wo Ha, that's a go for sure.

Thanks everyone! Jay Jay, all I can say is stick with it. I know for fact that even being able to compete on this level is largely thanks to advice from friends and fellow modelers here on FSM whose talent far surpasses mine.

Everything looked fine to me Greg, didn't see any issues anywhere on the trip related to flooding.

Big congrads to you on a well-deserved win there Eric, crossing my fingers you get a first place next time.

Guess I should have went, it's only a three hour drive but after my accident I've developed a bit of phobia about urban driving.

Hmm, watching the news last Tuesday, I think it was, I would have thought half the town was underwater. I should know better......
