Sign of an older modeler?
Posted by Straycat1911 on Saturday, August 13, 2016 1:45 PM

Lately I'm finding myself drawn to the kit makers of my younger days, mainly Monogram and in 1/48 scale. I"ve recently picked up an F-4C, a Interplanetary UFO, a batch of F-105's, a F-19 stealth fighter(the curvy one, not the Testors one),ect.

After a few years of dreaming, planning, accumulating AM stuff and trying a few with disappointing results, I've determined I'm better off not doing this hobby to make the BEST model kit or the DETAILED CONTEST WINNER; I'm doing this for my own enjoyment and if there's something a little off in terms of accuracy or shape, who cares? As long as the seams are clean and it fits the TLAR template, it's good. Right?

Questions? Comments? Recommendations? (as my old dad used to say)

I think that your statement hit the nail right on the head. This is a hobby that you do for relaxation and enjoyment. If you're not, then you must be doing something wrong. Only you have to be pleased with the results unless you're building it for someone else.

Sooooooo, sit back and relax, have a sip or two of your favorite beverage Coffee Beer Drinks or Toast and build away. If you have any questions/problems that you feel you need help with, just ask. The members here are very knowledgeable and are ready to help out. If you post pics of your builds, we can see how you're doing and will help, if needed.

There are many modelers who believe the fun is in the research and trying to correct every inaccuracy and replicate every last detail.

There are other modelers who believe the fun is in building the kit out of box to the best of their ability.

There are modelers who believe the fun is in collecting up all the various aftermarket items and adding metal tracks, aluminum barrels, photo etch, resin stowage and any other items they can find.

Other modelers have fun building elaborate bases with intricate ground work so their model tells a story.

None of these modelers are doing it wrong; just differently. It's like yard work; you may use a push mower, your neighbor might use a riding mower and another neighbor may have landscapers do it. None of them are wrong, they just do it differently.

Bottom line, if you are not having fun doing your hobby, you may need to rethink how you are doing it. Some projects I fix every little inaccuracy. Other projects get knocked out of the box and many are built somewhere in between.

I build mostly out of the box.  Sometimes I'll add some photo etch or maybe a better lookinf canopy, some different declas, it depends,  If it's a special aircraft that I was around, I usually will add some extras.  I occasionally will try to mate some P.S. to an older kit that I like, it doesn't always work, but I try.

I don't pay attention to how exact the shape may be.  If it's off a bit, I don't care.  Some people get too anal abouit the whole thing, thats' up to them, but the vast majority of people wouldn't notice, either at a club meeting of a contest.  They concentrate more on how the project came out.

It's a hobby, enjoy it.I have been since 1956.

I agree about building for relaxation and just for yourself. However, once in a while I like to enter a model in a contest to see what feedback I get. If I win then that's the frosting on the cake. It's nice to know your work is being recognized by advanced modelers/judges.

I'm in the same boat as you.  Most of my stuff is the older stuff and build out of the box except for aftermarket decals.  I might add aftermarket wheels or other resin from time to time but thats rare.
