Posted by tonycip on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 7:44 PM

Hi all, I just got my first model, Italeri M1A1 Abrams 6438. When I bought it I didn't know they remake models.. How do you know when a model was made? the kit I have has a bunch of resin parts copyright of 2004 on the box...but did they update it since then? Hmm

Hi Tony!

One really good source for finding out this kind of information is from a website called scalemates.com

https://www.scalemates.com/

I did a quick search for "Italeri M1A1 Abrams 6438" and it appears that the kit was released in 2004.  It looks like it is an updated version of Italeri's kit # 6390 which came out around 2003/2004.  If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you'll find a timeline showing when a particular kit was released and/or if it's been reboxed.

Here's the Scalemates page I pulled up when using the search parameter I mentioned above:  https://www.scalemates.com/kits/103478-italeri-6438-m1a1-abrams

And here's a review of the kit with a few more details (also taken from Scalemates):  http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/italeri/it6438.htm

Hope that helps!  Big Smile

Eric

The Italeri M1A1 with resin and the M1A2 are the same basic kit both released around the same time and are both original Italeri kits. They sort of goofed when they made the kits; the straight M1A2 was a rather rare version of the Abrams only used by a few battalions in a couple of divisions for a few years before it was replaced by the updated M1A2SEP.

They also made a mistake when they tooled the back deck (engine compartment). They molded a few of the grills in place on the upper hull that should be molded onto the removable part of the back deck. In other words, when the deck is removed to replace the engine, those grills are a permanent of the deck and would not be able to stay on the upper hull. So the engine compartment and resin engine set up are incorrect.

Compare the kit's smaller "T" shaped compartment to this Legends Model correct compartment. Notice how the four small grills that are on the Italeri upper hull are actually on the removable back deck of the Legend part.

Rob is the go to guy for US Army equipment, along with Gino.

Once you get past a few posts and the "probie" period they will pop up immediately.

It's not really an issue if built with the engine compartment in place or just to remove to show additional detailing. The accuracy issue is when trying to depict a diorama with the engine on the ground and guys working on it. It's not a bad kit; it's just not any better than the kits that were already out (Dragon or Trumpeter) and was surpassed by the Dragon kits in 2005 (AIM & SEP). Those two kits made the other Abrams kits obsolete over night.
