Anybody have a Finelite?
Posted by RudyOnWheels on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 10:30 AM

I just saw the ad on in the Finescale modeler product rundown email, It looks like it might be a solution to my lighting needs, does anybody have one? How do you like it? I have also been looking at "Ottlite", I bought the wife a small one for sewing, but WOW are the larger ones expensive! Any other lights you guys recommend? I'd like one with an arm like the finelite, (longer is better) or Maybe a floor mounted one to put behind me. All of my light is to the front, the only solution I have come up with when painting detail, is to turn on one or a pair of "contractor" halogen lights used by contractors, on floor stands. They take up a third of my room, and I bet you can watch the electric meter spin... that, and they get HOT nearly instantly!

  Thanks for your input, Rudy

Which Finelight are you looking at? A desk light or ceiling fixture? (I don't know which ad you are referring to)

I use a high output flourescent hanging ceiling fixture myself (it is very high output, loaded with bulbs and extremely bright). If I were buying the same type of fixture now, I'd get an LED one.

But to comment on LED lights in general, I've gone through several of the tripod-mounted halogen worklights you mentioned, lamp light is pathetic and I am in process of tossing them as I get around to it. I recently got a newer, LED version and am quite happy with it so I think you'll like LED lighting in general.

Hope I didn't wander too far from your question subject, and that this is somehow helpful.

Sorry, I have no experience with those lights.   I use one similar to this on my bench:

https://www.amazon.com/Fluorescent-Magnifying-Lamp/dp/B004GBAS0Q

and augment it with this:

https://www.amazon.com/Globe-Electric-Multi-Joint-separately-56963/dp/B00HX2EVPS/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1473868050&sr=1-2

My overhead lighting is 4' x 8 fluorescents, and of course, some daylight too.

Yikes! Kinda expensive if you ask me. I wouldn't pay that much for a light. I got mine at Staples for under $50

I use a 2-light fluorescent work light 4" x 4' with daylight bulbs attached to the bottom of the overhead cabinet above my work bench. It gives me plenty of light. If I need more for any reason, I have a moveable 75w light with a magnifier on the side of the bench that can be easily swung over to where it's needed. It only cost around 25$ at home depot.

If you are thinking about an Ott lite they are available at Jo Ann's. There are always 40/50 per cent coupons available. I use two ottlites and a swing Arm magnifier with light. It really freaks me out to see my fingers magnified while I work. Bob Gregory Ruining one kit at a time

Rudy,

Having no idea what a Finelite is, I looked on their website and thought you were looking for ceiling-mounted 'shop-type' lighting.

I wasn't even close and my reply had nothing to do with what you were asking, so, sorry about that.

No worries whatsoever Greg!! I am really open to all solutions, and also looked at those types of lights as well. My house was remodeled in 2007-8, (before we owned it) and EVERY room has super bright recessed can-style lights on a dimmer, EXCEPT my hobby room, which was skipped for whatever reason and has an $8 fixture with three bulbs that are aimable. Regardless, that damn thing needs to go! Thanks for the replies and input all! Rudy

I like a ring light magnifier thing. It is a small, circular fluorescent lamp, and has a strong magnifying lens in the middle of the lamp area. They are spring balanced with adjustable tension knobs so they can be positioned accurately.  They run about thirty bucks.  I love mine.

It is not sunlight matched, but how often do we display our models in sunlight?

Thanks don. I've been thinking about getting one of those, and for the price, I don't think you can go wrong. I'll order one tomm, and go from there. Thanks! Rudy

I saw one of those today at a garage sale, although I didn't buy it as I've got decent lighting. Years ago, I found a small Ott-Lite at another garage sale and for a while that was my main workbench light until I found a portable fluorescent desk light in the apartment dumpster. I fished it out, replaced the tube and it still works perfect! The Ott-Lite I still have, and it goes with me when I model on the road.

I bought one of these and installed it over my desk. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Commercial-Electric-3-ft-White-LED-Strip-Light-54259141/206028943

For being only a 30 watt fixture, the amount of light it puts out is amazing. I also have a flourescent magnifying light clamped to the desk and I want to replace that with LED as well. Might even install a 4' LED in the ceiling over the desk. You can never have too much light at a modeling desk. Good luck.

Similar, but not quite as stylish.  The one I bought has the counterbalance spring visibile, and the friction position knobs are visible.  And, most important, the one I got at my local Menards store was far cheaper- thirty bucks.

Yours sounds more like mine.  I used the Amazon product just as an example.  I believe I bought mine at Hobby Lobby several years ago.

Hi Rudy !

I have two OTTLITES purchased when a store went Out of Business . They cost me all of 40 bucks for the two .Brand new in the box , one desk and one floor model . They and a very old 60 watt desklamp on an adjustable snake neck with and LED bulb are what I use .

For the main shop I have two 48" superbright Flourescent lights and they are not the best in the winter .Though heated ( somewhat ) the garage lights seem to fail on a semiannual basis.   T.B.
