Houston Texas area scale model shops
Posted by Kradfahrer33 on Sunday, December 18, 2016 7:56 AM

Hello, Anyone in the Houston Texas area that can recommend a scale model shop that has a good amount and variety of ww2 scale kits ? In fact, anywhere from San Antonio, Waco and any town in between. I get most of my kits online but always enjoy stopping in a shop whenever I'm on the road. Never know whats hidden on them shelves. Thanks in advance !

The one that I frequent is in West Houston (I live in Katy, just west of Houston) is a HobbyTown USA that is located at 2392 Highway 6 South, Houston TX 77077.  This is in the shopping center along with a Best Buy, Academy, and Barnes and Noble at the intersection of Highway 6 and Westheimer.

There also is supposed to be a really good one in San Antonio and another in Austin, although I have never been to either and cannot even give you a name of those shops. Maybe Hill Country Hobby in San Antonio?  The one in Austin is located very near the Texas University campus from what I understand.

HobbyTown is always good, especially for tools and supplies. Their prices are competitive. Hill Country Hobbies is great, always a good supporter of the shows in the area. My go to for sure however is Kings Hobbies in Austin. I always love making the drive out ther. They do have a great selection of kits, especially WW2. They have tons of aftermarket parts as long as your willing to dig through bins to find the treasure. ;) They also have consignment bins full of kits that are a bit worn but still great and a lot cheaper. Its sad we don't have to many places in Houston anymore. I'm only 23 and I remember when there were 4-5 places you could go not named Hobby Lobby

There is also G&G Model Shop over in the West University Place/Rice Village area.  They've been there for decades.  They specialize in model railroading, but do offer a pretty good selection of plastic scale models of all types and vintages (even some out-of-production kits), as well as a pretty good selection of paints and tools.

Their web page: http://www.gandgmodelshop.com/

There is also Odyssey Hobbies in Webster, Texas (not far from the Johnson Spacecraft Center).  They have an okay selection, that's nice to peruse when I'm there for tools and supplies.  They cater more to the RC crowd, but I almost always come home with a new kit when I go there for paint and supplies.

Their web page is at: http://www.odysseyhobbies.com/ but it's returning a forbidden error, so I'm not sure if they've just let it lapse, or there's some other issue with the web site.

Hill Country Hobbies is on the northwest side of San Antonio.   It is well worth the trip from Houston.

Kings Hobbies is the THE hobby shop in Austin.   It is located on North Lamar, north of 183 in Austin,  not really near the UT campus.  Again well worth the trip.    Sheepishly, I will admit I have driven down from the DFW area.

February 18, 2017, IPMS San Antonio will be hosting their annual ModelFiesta show.   It too is on the northwest side of San Antonio.  Google ModelFiesta for details

Well, as a Texas Aggie I don't frequent North Lamar very often. Guess I just made an erroneous assumption here. I do have a son who now lives in Austin, so it looks like I will have an excuse to visit this shop next time I am in that town.
