My only two completions and my disaster in waiting
Posted by goldhammer on Friday, December 30, 2016 2:29 PM

Only managed two this year.  The Mustang ended up being gifted to MC's daughter as I found out it is her favorite plane, and she once sat on the wing.

The sub was gifted to a lady that serves on an advisory council with me.  Her Dad passed earlier in the year and I found out he served on the USS Chub at the end of, and after WWII.

The disaster is the paint on the Betty, but since fixed and nearing completion.

Thanks TB.  The red, white and blue on the P51 is all paint, stars and other logos kit decals. Was the 1/48 Hasegawa kit.  The sub is the 1/350 AFV offering.  Was built as a Gato, but his boat was a Balao, too late to do any changes to try and correct, and above my skill set anyway.

Good job! This is fun, does it happen every year?

Max

And disasters, I try not to admit to them but I seem to have more than my share and masking is one of the main culprits!

Appreciate it Max.  Seems like some of the more prolific folks give everyone a rundown of what was accomplished during the year.  Hoping for at least a couple of more in '17.

Hey GH,

Disaster ?  That's not a disaster !  That's just paint !

Very nice pair of completions.  I remember taking a crack at a Revell Mustang in that scheme when I was just starting out in modelling . . . a long time ago.

The Mustang is beautiful and the sub is too - in a totally different way.

Thanks Bossman and Bish.  Yes, just paint but for someone in the auto body/paint trade for 40+ years, it kind of bent me a little and set it aside for almost 9 months.

The 'stang won the gold cup unlimiteds in '94 in that scheme at the Reno air races.  Has a mild wing clip which was included in the kit.

GH,

There must have been someone that flew a version of that same scheme on a Mustang air racer going back to the '70's.  I remember a rather roughly brush painted version of that produced by the younger me.

Alas,  I remember the demise of that model very clearly.  My older brother came home from college and walked head first into the fishing line that was strung across our bedroom.  All of my 6 or 7 A/C models dove to their death.

They're just models . . . they're just models . . .

Really nice work, I love the P-51 too and I'm sure you'll have the issues with the Betty knocked out next year.

Thanks guys.  As far as the Betty, already fixed, just waiting on the other set of decals and a couple of hours to finish her up.

The P-51 speaks for itself, and having hacked at a 1:350  sub I now know what it should have looked like. Here's to  '17.'

i built a qiuck "concrete" base at water edge for my 1/35 MAIALE. gave it to my dentist who is retiring. i do not like building as a commission because i do not think my work is up to the standards i set when getting paid BUT i do enjoy giving builds as gifts to folks who will appreciate it.

The Betty is not that bad.A good brush and a steady hand will fix it right up.

That was the "good" part of it.  Peeled white on both wings and the fuselage.  Has been sanded out, repainted and decaled now.  Other pics of it are on the Japanese 5 GB toward the end.
