Modern Camo Painting?
Posted by Shnake on Monday, January 16, 2017 11:26 AM

Hey,

I was wondering how everyone is going about painting the modern camo patterns like digital camo?

I am looking at doing a 1/35th scale diorama for my son's birthday but I have no clue how to do the camo on the figures.

I have looked on ebay and didnt see any stencils for it.  The only thing I can think of is to use a stencil from a smaller scale model tank and adapt it to the unform but other than that I'm stumped.

Does using a very very fine paint brush cut really short and then dab it like doing stenciling on a wall?

Any help would be great!!

Shnake,

I know what a hassle it can be when it comes to painting modern camouflage.  It sounds intimidating when you want to paint it, but it isn't too bad.

What I do is paint the entire figure with the dominant color

BDU: Dark green

ABU: Light tan/green

NWU: Dark Blue

And so on and so forth.

Next, with your fine paintbrush (not necessarily cut short), dab the general color(s) on the figure.  With the ACU, for example, do small, random patches of light tan and sandy green.  On the ABU, however, do the relatively same colors but in the tiger stripe pattern.  An easier pattern would probably be the most recent ACU.

Coat your finished dudes in a dullcoat and then add the shadows in the folds of the blouse, pant legs, etc.

1/35 should be pretty simple...if it makes you feel any better, 1/48 is where the real "pain" in "painting" comes in.

Post some photos when you're done.  Good luck!

Joe
