With apologies to the fine men, women, and admins on this forum.

Been back on the forum for about a week now I am still amazed at the quality of the people and the builds.   You all are amazing modelers and awesome human beings. Bow Down

The site itself is what bothers me.

  1. The ads
  2. No "Back to Top" button
  3. No "Back" button of any kind
  4. The outmoded way we have to post images
  5. The annoying top banner that drops down over the discussion path when your mouse (or pen/tablet that I use) gets too close
  6. No spell check
  7. an aposttophe " ' " in a title and the software has knipshin

I'm not going to leave, but it does make moving around the pages tedious and sometimes frustrating.

Sorry, had a stressful day and needed to vent. Lightning

I am not connected with FSM at all, except I have written a couple of articles for them as a free-lancer.  I have nothing whatsoever to do with the forums other than as a user.

The ads I guess is one disadvantage of free forums.  I probably wouldn't use this forum if I had to pay.  Many other free forums I frequent also have ads.

The navigating functions may be a problem with the browser or computer you are using.  I use a PC with Windows 10.  I can get back to top of page by using CONTROL- (up arrow).  My browser (Mozilla Firefox) has a back arrow to take me back to last page.

Having FSM host the images would be nice, but images take a whopping big amount of memory, and I can see for a small operation like FSM, the cost of servers and drives able to store all those images might be pretty expensive.

I do agree that link area for that top banner is too close to the navigation links, and there should be a space between those areas.

Not sure whether the spell check problem is a browser problem or a web site problem.  Spell check would be nice, but since I am not sure whether that is a browser or web site issue I am neutral on it.

Thanks for the input Don.

As I said, I had a bad day yesterday.  I regretted posting it almost as soon as I hit the button.

It's just annoying litle things that were not here before the big change a few years ago (except for the photo's).

I agree that photos take a lot of space, but many websites have found solutions.  I belong to several other free forums where you can directly upload from my computer.

I use Chrome so I'm not sure if there is a hot key for top of page etc.  but I'll do some Googling!

I'm feeling better this morning.

Since when is the onus on the website to provide a back button? Web browsers have had back buttons since . . . well, as far back as I can remember. As long as the web developers don't break the back button, it will work (as it does on this forum).

Spell check would be nice. Web browsers have built-in spell checkers, but they don't work with these wysisyg editors for some reason. But there are plenty of free spell checkers out there, so I don't know what their excuse is.

Apostrophes in titles work fine. Something weird must be going on at your end.

This forum had a "Back to Top" button  before the software change.  If I remember right, it was located under each reply, or at least at the bottom of each thread page.

I just want it back.

Sorry, had a stressful day and needed to vent. Lightning

While i agree with most of what you say, this one always confuses me. I see this mentioned over and over and yet i can't see how this is differant to most other forums.

I am currently in other forums that allow upload directly from my PC.  Add to that Facebook and so many other web pages allow direct uploads.  This forum is a website, the technology exists and has existed for quite a while.

Interesting. I have been to a number of modelling forums and not one of them allows that, and most have a more awkward way of loading photo's than here. In fact this site is one of the easiest i have found to load pics but seems to be the only one where i have seen people complain about it.

Bish -

The other forums I frequent are on are not modeling forums.  They are drumming, scuba, and Camaro forums...the other hobbies that take up my time and money.

Certaintly, if Facebook and other social media forums, and photobucket itself have the technology to allow direct uploads - this forum can implement it.

Anyway, this thread is just my opinion, I meant no disrespect to anyone.

Yes Model Ship World, Audiokarma,Jalopyjournal and the Guns Abd ammo forums have a feature that allows you to upload pictures directly from my tablet without having to go to photobucket and cut and paste. That would be a nice feature to add to the FSM forums for sure.

that drop down banner is one of the most annoying things around

I like the link to click on your discussions so I can see what I responded to quickly

I'm glad they removed the ability to do that for other members, I had my own personal troll who would only respond to my comment (even made some comments in old threads in categories I never post in to verify). Once he couldn't easily find my posts, he vanished.

Yikes!  Surprise  Life is too short to troll forums.

Bish-

It may not be for you but to me it's a major pain having to upload first to photobucket (which is what I use) then copy the link to each picture and post on my message. Constant back and forth. Oh and by the way scale-models.co.uk allows direct uploads. Doing one or two pictures is no big deal but when Im wanting to do a WIP thread it really takes the fun out of it to an extent.

Well, as i said before, i have seen plenty of other forum, including Brit modeller, Armorama and others (hardly small fry in the modelling world) and yet this is the only one where i see it mentioned and you would think its the only forum that does it this way.

I always thought that an upgrade to website met adding features and not taking them away.  FSM forum is not as friendly as the old site was several years ago.

Dont think anyone is saying this is the only place that does it that way. I think we are saying if it's out there to make life easier which it is then why not use it? Just my thoughts.. I still love this forum

Ditto that.

I get frustrated with the layout and the latest changes from a couple years back like everyone else, but at the end of of the day I'm with goldhammer, glad FSM provides it for us.

Probably the biggest thing that chaffs me is the lack of being able to sell and trade here. Other forums have sponsors and still allow it. Obviously it hasn't hurt their advertising stream, or they would have gotten rid of it!

All in all, the site has its pros and cons. The revamps do not seem to really improve anything, but I understand they may be needed to keep compatible with the latest devices. But like the title says, it's the members that keep me coming back.

The only complaint I have with the forum is I can't mchange my email address. There's been a question about this in the Tech Assistance forum for 8 months now with the only response from the admins being the wrong answer. It's very frustrating when the people in charge of the place won't try and answer a question about a problem the members are having, even if the answer is what we don't want to hear. No one wants to be ignored. It's not only rude, it's unprofessional.

Amazing that it is still operating as normal.  All the other newsgroups I followed have been taken over by vandals and cruddy people.  I have not gone to a newsgroup in quite awhile. I wonder if going through google groups makes a difference.

Not quite as normal. Maybe 3-5 people who might post every couple of months, normally when a stranger discovers some a post that is 20 years old and replies. Cookie still pops up some of his old school reviews on occasion.
