Grandson wants to learn!
Posted by Old_Fart on Saturday, May 6, 2017 3:44 PM

Something pretty cool happend the other day I wanted to share with you all! The wife and I are in the process of moving from a apartment into a house. Her kids are helping us with the heavy stuff. They had my wifes grandson with them. He is 12 years old, well he spotted a jeep wrangler model on had on display in the basement bar and really liked it. I asked him if he has ever put together a model and he told me no. Told him i could teach him how if he was interested and his eyes got as big as silver dollors! So i took him upstairs to the workshop and told him he could pick out any kit he liked. He picked a 69 Cuda kit. So once we get all moved in he is going to spend some week-ends with us learning the craft :D

You're a lucky man, O.F. No kid's or grandkid's for me, but in retirement I have taught many neighbor kid's, even some of their dad's that never learned. In summer my garage shop noise attracts them quickly. Great fun.

Good for you! Both of you! All of my kids tried their hand at building. My youngest did for longer than the rest. But they all eventually stopped in their teens. My son has gotten back into it with Gundams though.

Excellent, good for you!  My grandson is only nine months old and I've already told my son I want to teach him how to build a kit.

That's great, I'm glad for you all.  Sometimes, it just doesn't work, however.  I tried to get my grandson interested first with a 1/72 snaptite aircraft model, then with a building for his HO train layout.  Nothing.  He's a very bright kid and now off to music with the school band, and computer stuff.  No interest in modeling.  But he is doing fine in other areas he enjoys, so I'm pleased.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

From one old fart to another, Old_Fart, that's great news! Wish you the best in your adventures with the grandson. I will have to see where my granddaughters' interests are...they like to work with their hands and building things....we shall see!! And if they aren't interested, maybe I'll wait on a grandson!!! Keep the hobby goin'!!

Cherish the H out of this! Have a grand daughter I don't get to see often enough. A grand child gives me a second chance at some things!

Thank you all for the replys !!! Yea I think it's pretty cool myself. It will give me a chance to get to know him better / bond. And pass along what I can remember the skills to model building. 35+ years ago when I started I had no mentors and learned stuff on my own. It's just a slow process at this point as were still moving into the new house. If everything goes as planed tonight will be our last night in the apartment. And he will be spending the next weekend with us. Yes, I will post his work in this thread :D
