P-51D air racers
Posted by ardvark002 on Friday, May 19, 2017 8:22 PM

Hi fellow builders,  Has anyone modified a 1/32 P-51D into the Red Baron or any other similar plane? I'm pretty sure I'll need a vacumn press to do this. I've found mattel presses on line fairly cheap. Any feedback and tips will be appericated.  Thanks, Aardvark

I found this...

I've only done one racer..."Galloping Ghost"...but that was in it's early form, no modification required.

I am planning a project.  I have the Revell 1/32 Miss America P-51 that I intend to convert to Precious Metal, another unlimited racer.  I found a counter-rotating prop that will work well.  My Vacu-form is too small to do the conversion- I will make firewall forward from wood, carving and filling it before beginning regular painting.  For vacuum forming, you need to carve a master pattern anyway, so for a one-off- no production intent- why not just use the pattern as the part you need (assuming you will not have an engine in it)?

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
