Grey spray primer from the hardware store will do the job. That type of metal, often called Britannia metal, is really common in better ship models. Back in the bad old days it was lead.

Here's a thread for your amusement.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Hi!

Cheers for the good advice. I'll scout out some metal primer.

Yeh, sorry about that all. Only saw the Paint section after I posted this.. Doh! Haha

Welcome aboard, I would imagine that one would need to make sure the zinc is clean and dry before appling anything. A good metal primer would be well advised then once that has cured you could probably paint with most anything. As a side note try to repost your question in the paint and finish section of the forums, there is ALOT of helpful folks to give advice, ya just gotta find them. Good luck and happy modeling.

Newbie Painting Advice - Zinc Model
Posted by Roverholic on Monday, July 24, 2017 3:13 AM

Hi There

Newbie to the fourms and newbie to modelling. Looking for advice on painting a zinc model, had a good look around the internet but not really found what I'm looking for.

Basically I have mini cyclist models that are zinc alloy and about 5cm long. You can buy them already painted but I want to buy blanks and paint my own designs.

What process should I follow therefore? Will I need to use primer? Or is there a correct paint type that will bond to zinc well already out there eliminating this need? Is there a particular varnish that I will use afterwards?

Below are some pictures of what they come like and what I want to achieve..
