Photo hosting experiment
Posted by Don Stauffer on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 9:10 AM

With the changes to Photobucket, lots of us are scrambling to find a new photo hosting site.  After trying a few others, I had found Google Photo to be convenient, and started using it for FSM picture posts.

However, I find that some people can see the pictures I post, and some cannot.  I am trying to find out why this is.  So this is a little experiment and survey.  I am posting a picture below, and wonder how many of you can see the image. Let me know if you can see it, and answer two other survey questions.

1.  Are you signed up with a google account (Google +, Google docs, Google Play/Store for Android, etc.)?

2.  What browser are you using (Chrome, Firefox, something from Apple, one of the Windows standard browsers, etc.)?

hi Don, I see it. I do have Google accounts and am using Chrome. Last week I was one of a few that saw the P-59 pictures at first then when tried to view them again, just got the grey circle/minus sign.

I will come back to this again later and see if it happens again, will let you know.

You are visible again and it still looks good! No Google affiliation other than to use it. Mac/Safari here.

I do see the pic.  No Google account, and browser is Firefox on an iMac.  Nice to see your P-59 again.  Smile

Cheers, Mark

Hello Don!

At first I didn't see a thing. Then I have logged on to my google account. After that I reloaded the page and after that I see that gray circle with a white dash in it. I browse from Poland and I use Windows 7 and regularly updated Firefox. I sure do hope you can figure out some reliable picture hosting service. Have a nice day

I've got the grey dot.  I went to flicker.  But when I try to post a picture here FSM asks for a source and a size.  How do I answer?

I use Postimage.org. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to post pics. I'm happy with it and screw you Photobucket!!

The best part? It's free and I don't need to set up an account to post pics. Setting up an account is optional though.

Don, I posted this morning that I could see your pic.  But I just checked back in this thread and now I don't see it.  Now I just see the circle with the minus sign.

It's crazy, I'm using the same machine (iMac) and browser (Firefox) that I was using this morning!  This doesn't make sense to me.  Confused

Cheers, Mark

I see nothing but that grey dot. When I click on it it sends me to the Google sign in page Which  i dont have. So I created an account and signed in. Now when I click on the dot it says the page is unavailable.

I use Crome for my browser.

UPDATE: just tried again. Now when I click the dot it opens a new page thats nothing but the dot enlarged.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

I just tried a little experiment. I copied the URL details from your image and pasted it into word. Then did the same with several of my images from my GP. If you select CTRL and click my images the hyerlink takes me to chrome and opens the URL and I can see the image, but yours didnt and I get an error.

Don,

Can't see your picture. I don't see a gray circle or a question mark. I have a Google account and am signed in. Using Firefox on Fedora (Gnu/Linux).

I can see Pawel's pictures.

My guess is it has nothing to do with the browser. Look at setting for the photo album. Make sure sharing is turned on.

The two images are actually posted by me, but no matter. What's uncertain is why I can easily post images hosted by Google Photots that can de seen, and the images Don posts can not.

As we dont actually know how the image data is found, where and how its ultilised and what settings are set within Google Photos it is difficult to assist.

What I am assuming, is that everybody how posted here since my first post can see the two images I posted, so Google Photos will work.

You do need to put in the URL of the picture.  How you get that URL on Flicker I do not know yet.  I have always left size blank- the FSM client seems to figure out a good size to display it without me telling it.

I'm afraid that I'm also unable to see your pics Don. I do not use a google accnt. I use Chrome as my browser on Windows 10. I just tried out photoimage.org and just today posted some pics from there for the first time. I hope folks will let me know if they are coming through.

I'm really confused.  The experiment seems to be delivering completely uncorrelatable results!

Hello Don!

Well I wouldn't say that - to me it looks like we have a good consensus here. At first people were able to see your pictures, but then they got unavailable - even to those who were able to see them at first. What's interesting is the fact, that damouav's pictures are not only visible but also stable. That would tell me that there's no general problem with google here, but something specifically with your account or maybe with the link/URL you are using - this seems pretty temporary, I mean at first it's working fine and then, a bit later - not at all.

I hope you can resolve this one soon - I miss your pictures on these forums! Good luck and have a nice day
