It's not a modelling project, but it's a project for my models.

I don't like to dust, so I've been trying to keep them behind glass.  IKEA makes a pretty good display case for about $70, but they're a little small.

Each shelf can accommodate two 1/48 scale, single-engine fighters or three 1/35 AFV's.  Ships over a foot in length are too large.  Some modellers boost the product's capacity by adding shelves, but I think that may be a little crowded.

I wanted to get a larger display cabinet, but they're expensive.  I researched some DIY options, and I nearly bought some lumber.  Then, I went to a thrift store with my wife.  I saw the ugliest bookshelf that has ever been made.  It was nasty.  It had a white stain finish with a goopy polyurethane top coat.  It had burn marks, stains and coffee rings.  However, it was of a good size, it had a solid construction, and it had glass shelves.  I bought the thing.  I didn't take a picture, because it was so ugly.  It took me hours to sand off the nasty old finish.

It got a stronger top panel, and two back panels.  Then it got two applications of Minwax Espresso stain.

I was as accurate as I could be with my measurements for the glass.  I measured twice, then I measured another few times.  Most of the panels fit like a glove, but I had to sand a little wood to get a side panel to fit.  The eight pieces of glass took about a week from a local glass shop.  I fit the glass doors with friction hinges and hardware from amazon.

The LED's came from amazon as well.  They had a option to get a traditional switch or a motion sensor.  I opted for a motion sensor.  It would be like having the lights on all of the time, but the lights wouldn't actually be on all of the time.  It doesn't work right mounted behind the glass, so I'll have to change that.  I turn the light on by opening one of the glass doors.   However, I love the look created by the lights.

Here's how she looks now.  The main rotor arc of my 48 scale CH-53E prevents me from placing it under glass, but most of my stuff is covered.  My larger builds can reside in the new display case, and my smaller stuff can go in the IKEA cases.  I still have the third IKEA case as room to grow.

I'm a little sick of wood.  I'm ready to get back to plastic.

I'm glad my wife dragged me to the thrift store.

Thanks for looking,

Chris

That’s looking good. Lots of satisfaction from finishing a project like that.

Based on the first picture, I wouldn't have expected that to look so good when done.  Another example of a modeler grabbing what most people think is garbage and turning it into something that looks great.  Nice job on that cabinet.

Guess I will be going to some thrift stores soon, and asking "Where is your ugliest display case?".

Dwayne or Dman or just D.  All comments are welcome on my builds.

That looks fantastic and you did the same as I would have. If I may suggest a couple of additions. First you can add more shelf space, probably 2 more shelves to give you more storage and yet not overcrowd the look. I would also add a mirror to the back and bottom shelfs. The mirror will add more light and better angle views of your builds.

A while back I found a really big lighted display case by accident at an antique store that was closing up and got it for an excellent price. I added 4 more glass shelves and added a mirrored bottom to reflect more light. Now I have 6 shelves over 4ft long .

Nice work man!

Very creative use of someone's trash into something to display your hobby.

BTW, I couldn't help but notice the acoustic on the stand.  What is it?

PS I play a little myself...

Excellent suggestions.  I did think about adding mirrors to the back, but I decided to put that off.  I'd save some money in the short term, and I'd get a sense of how it looked.  I did have doubts about how it'd turn out, so I did things in affordable steps.

It'd be very easy to add another shelf or two.  I could move the B-24 shelf down, and put a new shelf between the B-24 and my great uncle's destroyer with flag.  I would only have to drill four holes for the pegs and order the glass.

The guitar belongs to my wife.  I believe its a Fender.  It's pretty nice for how inexpensive it was.  I play a little bass, but I'm a few years out of practice.  Neither of us are very musical, but we tried.

Thank all of you for checking out my project, and thank you for your kind words.  I'm glad you like it, because I'm pretty proud of it.  I'm not a carpenter, but I enjoy a wood project once or twice a year.  Thankfully, I still have all of my digits.

I thought it looked like a Fender, but couldn't be sure.

Fender's really stepped up their acoustic game lately.  The Paramount series is solid soundoards at a very reasonable price point.

And I play some bass as well, have a jazz bass I built and a precision I modified.
