I think I'm addicted?
Posted by D.Savage on Saturday, December 30, 2017 1:12 AM

Got back modeling a few years ago when a friend got me a kit for christmas.

I have finally come to terms that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

So other than stockpiling kits as my "side money" allows my biggest problem is paint, and other supplies, but mainly paint.

For some reason when it comes to paint i always feel I'm missing something, like I absolutely have to have every single Vallejo paint that they make...

Some times it's nearly debilitating, like I'm stricken with some sort of paralysis.

Today I saw a guy on Craig's list selling 900+ jars/rattle cans of Testors model master paints for $400 and I was very tempted!!

Had he said he would split it and sell me just the jars I'd have torn his arm off.

Something about having a giant paint rack stocked full of paints makes me feel complete in some wierd way...

I am constantly organizing/displaying all my paints and supplies for no one and to no one but myself.

It's maddening!

Is this normal amongst modelers?

And then worst part is, I will still even with all this great paint still reach for some $.89 Delta creamcoat to avoid "wasting" the good stuff!

Am I losing my mind?

I have no other areas of life where this type stuff is remotely a problem but with models and this hobby it's a HUGE problem!

I mean I smuggle paint in the house as if it were crack!!!

Anyone else like this?

I have a lot of paint but I can't say I have too much.  I will admit that I did buy a few extra bottles of Model Master Enamels in FS and other colours that Testors has discontinued.  For the most part, I generally buy what I need and go from there.  The only colours that I tend to over buy are a few shades of grey (mostly 36495 and 36231) and flat black.

By all means, use the "good stuff."  Don't waste effort and money on that cheap Delta and other "craft" paints!  You won't regret it.

I don't have a problem with paints.  In fact, since I use Testors enamel, which has a short shelf life once open, I now plan on buying paint when I start building each kit, unless I know I have a bottle of something that has never been opened.

On the other hand, I certainly have way too many kits.  As I approach my Eightieth birthday, I realize I have far more kits than I have years left in which to build them.  Still, if a new kit comes out that I just have to have, from many mfgs who only do small runs and don't repop, I have to go out and buy it!

""And then worst part is, I will still even with all this great paint still reach for some $.89 Delta creamcoat to avoid "wasting" the good stuff!""

I have a problem too.....

Although I have mass amount of high quality brushes and paints collected over the past few years when I had some extra cash, I will still used cheap or used tools and paints I have lying around in order to "save" the good stuff.  Then when a finish goes completly south, or I end up botching a build because the tool failed, I get all frustrated and want to quit.

New Years Resoltion #2, to purge all cheap, broken, worn hobby stuff from my premises so I am no longer tempted to "cut" corners.  No more brushes that had seen better days, no more paint that I bought 35 years ago and is more goo than pigment, and of coarse, replace that stupid worn, bent, airbrush tip with the new one I just got from Santa.

Guilty. My paint stash is as big as my model one. With the exception of tamiya, all my other paints are bought on line, so it pays to stock up.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

I have a similar problem.  I'm always afraid I am going to run out of something and it's going to stop my build in its tracks, so I land up buying 2 of a lot of things.  At one point I found out I had 6 different packages of paint brushes!  I have 2 of quite a few different paints, the colors that I use most.  I'm broke 99% of the time which keeps me from buying stuff I don't really need at the time.  But as soon as I get some extra cash or gift cards, like I did at Christmas it's an all out shopping spree.  I went through my $50 giftcard at hobby lobby in one trip and that was just on a few bottles of paint and other supplies.  I purchsed 4 kits online, and then bought 2 more at the local hobby store.  Keep in mind I have a much smaller stash than most, 22 kits total.

I'm nearly the exact same way, I too worry about running out of something.

I also do the binge shopping whenever I have the funds (that the wife doesn't know about)

Just bought 8 figure kits, a set of Vallejo model air (never tried it) a big bottle of Vallejo thinner and primer.

And if I go out in town today, I will raid hobby lobby even further.

We have no real hobby shop, so alot of things are out of reach for me since Hobby lobby doesn't stock alot of stuff.

I can't get Tamiya, AK, Mig, lifecolor...or even the Vallejo model Air.

If I ever want that stuff I have to order it online.

Still got about $325 absolutely incinerating my right butt cheek.

Any ideas?

Apparently, I am in recovery. I got some Amazon GCs. and loaded my account. Only bought a VJ Model Air basic colors set. I had a Tamiya Char Bis and Beaufighter in the cart and looked at my stash of 25ish and deleted the cart. I need to get into the building instead of buying mode.

I suffer from the same problem......my lady is going to freak when we finally move in together this next year.  Closet full of kits, more MM and Tamiya paint than I can carry in a big box.  And to top it off, when one of the LHS's closed, I just about wiped out his Alclad stock, and have never fooled with it at all.

Already told her my work bench is going to be a 52" Husky roll around tool cabinet that I bought just for that purpose.  She knows we will have to make a spot for it somewhere.

Not on your life, but then she just paid $600+ for her clarinet repair.  She has her music, I have my own "problem".

She'll find out soon enough, but knows about some of the pile.

But since we divorced 35 years ago, she already has some prior knowlege about me.

With that amount of money I would be going the tattoo route!  It's another one of my addictions, but I rarely, and I mean very rarely have enough money to get another.  The last one I got I didn't even pay for.....the BIL did for letting him use my truck for a month.  That was almost a year ago.  Certainly seems like time to get another one.  I would like to get my Camaro tattooed on me somewhere in memory of my Dad.  But that is going to be a pricey tattoo!

No one has mentioned that the AKA for the Forums is "Plasticaholics Anonymous". We are all members to some degree. As a member in good standing, I hope, I have a stash of around 300 kits. Some are old and some are new. At the rate that I build, It should take me about 200+ years to complete them. Just moved into a Senior Retirement Community "cottage" about 5 weeks ago that meant downsizing quite a bit. Got rid of a lot of "stuff" but even with a larger room as my "hobby room", I don't have the closets that I had in the old house to hide the stuff in. So. it looks like I have a lot more than I had.

One trick for getting those new kits into the house is to go to the Model Shows and be sure to buy raffle tickets. Whether you win or not keep the tickets and put one in each kit that you "pick-up" at the vendor tables. Upon arrival at home after the show you can say "Look what I won". It's worked for me for years.

I wouldn't consider it insanity or abnormal. I have the full line of Tamiya, I am 9 colors away from having the entire line of Mission Model Paints, and I just ordered the Vallejo Military paint set that contains 78 colors. I look at it like this...this is my hobby, so I want to have and be prepared for any color needed. Plus, each brand has it's own characteristics.

Exactly!  I'm up to 5 total.  It's been almost 2 years since I got my first one.  Within a few months of getting the 1st one I got 2 more.  Then roughly 6 months later #4, a few more months later and I had #5.

Look in the "Technical Forum"... I believe Stikpusher addressed this issue, and highlighted how to post from a smartphone.

D.Savage,

You beat to the punch. Thats is one well organized bench. Was that pic. taken Pre or Post buildBig Smile.

I guess I have the addiction as well or at least a form of it. My delimma has to do with buying more than one kit at once. when I come accross a good deal I'll buy everything even if its in duplicate. Some of you may have noticed this when I post in the latest acquisitions thread.
