Why are the Jolly Rogers and the Sundowners so popular?  There's so many other noteable Navy Squadrons.  There's the TopHatters, the Grim Reapers, the Black Aces, the Tomcatters....so many others.

 

Feel the same way,bought some after market Grim Reapers decals for mine.

Well;

 For my personal builds I have three of the old Monogram Kits and the Tamiya kit Gifted to me this year .Yeah , It's a beautiful box of plastic .Thank Goodness it was a gift ! .

 Definitely the Tamiya . O.O.B and treat each part like it's own kit . Assemble and paint then , assemble the small kits into the one large one . You won't regret it . Mine is inmarked as we speak .I haven't figured which air group to put it with .

 I am kind of figuring the Jolly Rogers or the Sundowners .

I have built Revell, Hasegawa and Tamiya F-14's and Tamiya's Cat is a JOY to build. Do yourself a favor and get the Tamiya Cat for a hasle free build.

IMO you can build one hell of a cat OOB. The included weapons surpass Hasegawa's details. The pit is just gorgeous OOB.

Thanks everyone I really appriciate the help.  I'll probably save up for the Tamiya kit, and accessories for it.

Painting has always been my extreme achilies heel.  Well and glueing, and cutting, sanding, priming, basically I suck at modeling :)  but its kind of fun again now that the kids are helping me with it.  

I agree Don I wish the instructions were a bit better or had a few more tips in them when it comes time to do what, when etc...but I also suppose its to keep us having a bit more creativity too.  For me though, I wish it was all step by step.

One of the biggest failings of instructions, especially on simple models, is telling the builder when to paint what.  Many kit mfgs also do not do a very good job of identifying colors, showing only color views of the assembled model.

One of our most frequent questions is, "should I wait and paint the model after assembly, or paint each part before assembly."  The answer usually is, depending on the model, neither. It is a paint a little, asssemble a little, repeat, etc.

If you shake the box long enough, the Tamiya kit will assemble itself!

No kidding, this is a great kit!

If you want to build an F-14, the monogram / Revell kit is a great deal. If you just want to assemble something fast and paint it . the Tamiya would be great

 

So the Revell kit seems to be cheaper, but from what I have understood on some reviews of it, its pieces seem...how do I say it kindly....fit like $#^%?

But the Tamiya spendy, gorgeous, but seems to almost snap together, flush; damn near waterproof lol

That's a second on the Tamiya kit.  I was very, VERY, impressed at the Tamiya Tomcat.  The construction is well suited to painting, allowing you to add the swing wings after you paint the rest of the fuselage, eliminating an annoying step I've had with other Tomcats in the past.  Fit is near perfect and while I've seen some better details in areas like wheel wells on other kits, the Tamiya gets it mostly right.  For a big, complex kit it is about as worry free and painless as you can get.

Hobbylinc.com is a site I often order from.  They have a rewards point system, and quite the selection of stuff. 

As for which F-14 kit.  I've seen the price for the Tamiya kit, and wow.  I've built the Revell F-14 kit, and it does need a little work, but it still turns out to be a good looking display piece.

AsJay said, good idea to treat them seperatly, i do the same with AFV tools and tracks only bringing them all together just before the final weathering stage. But everyone has their own way oif doing it and its somthing you will pick up as you do more builds and find waht suits you best.

As for paint, it largely depends on where you are and what paints you want. Some stores like Sprue Brothers will carry a selection of brands especialy the more common ones such as Tamiya. Other brands of paint may be harder to find.

I have one main website, Hannants, that i can order a wide range of stuff from, and then other sites for certain items. E-bay is also handy for some modelling tools.

Thank you!  Never crossed my mind of breaking it down to seperate models and painting them that way.  Makes perfect sense.

Also, is there a good website to purchase paints, acessories, etc that you guys know of?  Amazon doesnt have many of the aftermarket things you all add to your models and I have no hobby stores near me that carry much of anything other than paint for models.

Think of the ordinance as a seperate model. Finish the paint on the model, then install the finished ordinance.

Another tip from your Unlce Jay;  completely finish painting the moveable wings (ie the F-14 ) before installing the wings on the model. it's dificult to paint the wing areas that move and are hidden into the fuselage after they are assembled.
